It is safe to say that the Coast Guard has been a part of Sterling Heights since its establishment in 1879. The first Coast Guard station was located on Michigan Avenue, and it was here that the first lieutenant governor of Michigan, George H. W. Arnold, served as commander. This location would later be replaced by the current headquarters building on Woodward Avenue. The Coast Guard has played an important role in the city for many years, and their presence can be seen in both the physical and cultural landscape of our community. From providing security during holiday time to helping keep our waterways clean, the Coast Guard has always had a presence in Sterling Heights. One of the most famous gifts given to the City by the Coast Guard was a set of boat anchors donated by Rear Admiral James Kapp (1911-1994) following his retirement from service in 1992. These anchors are still used today and can be found at Harbor Beach Marina near downtown Sterling Heights. Sterling Heights is a city in Muskegon County, Michigan, United States. The population was 43,402 at the 2010 census. Sterling Heights is part of the Detroit metropolitan area. The first Europeans to visit what is now Sterling Heights were French traders and missionaries on their way from Detroit to Upper Canada in 1797. They named the village "Ville de la Cote" (City of the Coast). In 1805, after being Acquired by the United States as part of the Louisiana Purchase, it became part of Washtenaw County under President James K. Polk's administration. It again became a municipality in 1836 when it was merged with other townships in Muskegon County and became known as Sterling Heights Township. On February 14, 1888, it lost its status as a township when it was annexed by Detroit into that city's wards; however, it has since regained its autonomy as a city-owned town,. In 1899–1901, Mayor John Fritchett developed what would eventually become his signature project – construction of an expressway through downtown which he called "The Avenue". The $5 million project took three years to complete and helped spur economic development within and around downtown which reached a peak during World War I due to increased military production in nearby Flint and Ann Arbor. The avenue also served as an important corridor for vehicular traffic between Detroit and other cities across central Michigan through two separate tunnels: one under Woodward Avenue and another underneath Macklinore Road/Gratiot Boulevard. The tunnel projects were completed without fatalities or major accidents until 1955 when veteran auto worker Clifford Wiegand died after falling down one of the tunnels while on work security duty
