St. Clair Shores, Michigan is a city in St. Clair County, Michigan, United States. The population was 5,948 at the 2010 census. It is the county seat of St. Clair Shores County. The city was founded in 1837 as a small settlement on the east side of the Mackinac River by Methodist missionaries from London who were working with the Canadian Missionary Society. The town grew rapidly and by 1853 had become an important commercial center on the Mackinac River because of its location near both large lumber mills and shipbuilding yards. By 1900, St. Clair Shores had become one of America's largest grain storage and shipping points for agricultural products such as corn, soybeans, wheat, flour, milk and butter. In 1912, when Mackinac Bridge was built across the river to connect Detroit with Fort Wayne (then part of Indiana), St. Clair Shores became an essential link in that path; it remained an important transportation hub through most of the 20th century until suburban development supplanted it as a major economic center

It is located on the Rouge River about 20 miles (30 km) north of Detroit and about 25 miles (40 km) south of Ann Arbor. The area that now makes up St. Clair Shores was first settled by French fur traders in 1795 as part of Ionia Township, part of what is now Muskegon Heights Township. The name "Shore" came from a meadow near where the town stands today, meaning "shore" or "prominence." In 1814, during the War of 1812, General Anthony Wayne's army retreated after being repulsed at Battle of Inkerman Creek with heavy losses at Shorline Key near present-dayDetroit; when Wayne arrived back in Detroit he ordered Major General David Durocher to take control of Ionia Township affairs there and rename it Stroudsburg Township; because many residents had fled to Canada during that battle, this change also applied to Shorelineshire proper which reverted to Callaway Township two years later In 1835, a group led by Augustus Kelley purchased 8 acres (3 ha) east of what is now downtown St Clair Shores from John Cook for $1 per acre ($27 per sq mi). In 1840–41, Kelley laid out a town grid on his land with four streets running north/south and two avenues running east/west within each block bounded on one side by State Road 498 and another avenue extending into neighboring Callaway Township In 1861 when Washtenaw County was created from portions of Oakland County, Stroudsburg became its capital. In 1855, the first permanent settler in what would become St. Clair Shores was George W. Cline. He and his wife, Sarah, arrived from Ohio in a wagon train and began to farm land that is now part of the city. The town was officially founded on February 14th of that year by John Prentice and others who searched for a place to live after being displaced by the American Civil War. The name "St Clair Shores" was chosen because it seemed like a bay where shipwrecked sailors could find refuge. The town's first store opened in 1860, and due to its location on the Michigan River, it quickly became an important commercial center for the area. In 1872, more settlers arrived from Illinois and Indiana, making St. Clair Shores one of the most populous towns in Michigan at that time. By 1886, there were over 100 people living in the town and it had become an agricultural center with mills producing flour, cottonseed oil, potatoes, etc..The Erie Canal was completed in 1905 and made shipping through Lake Huron much easier; this led to increased traffic along the river which caused businesses such as banks and hotels to open up around downtown St Clair Shores. In 1929-1930, during World War II (the second world war), St Clair Shores became one of several U-boat pens located along the Michigan River near Sault Ste Marie due to Allied efforts to deny German submarines access to vital supplies needed for their war effort.. In 1951-1952 when Communist China threatened America with nuclear attack if they did not allow them into our country; President Harry Truman ordered all U-boats within five miles of America's coasts be sunk; this included St Clair Shore which yielded no results until 1952 when President Dwight Eisenhower announced plans to build a new military base at Fort Walton Beach Fla., putting an end to those threats.. After years of decline resulting from manufacturing plant closures and annexation by other cities; StclairShore revived somewhat in recent years with some new development including high school enrollment reaching 20+ students per grade (which is still higher than most urban schools) as well as box office successes such as "The Expendables", "Thor: Ragnarok"and "Detroit".
