Army gifts have been a part of the St. Clair Shores community for over thirty years. The first time Army troops ever arrived in town was in 1951 when they were called in to help with the Korean War. Since then, there have been many different types of Army Gifts that have come through the town. From small items like mugs and T-shirts to larger items such as tanks and rifles. The Michigan Army National Guard has a rich history dating back to the early 1800s. The unit was originally called the "St. Clair Shores Volunteer Infantry" and was organized on December 15, 1812 under the command of Colonel John C. Griggs. The company was first attached to the 7th Regiment of Infantry, Michigan Militia, and served in the War of 1812.
The regiment participated in engagements at Ironton, Stoney Creek, and Battle of Inkerman. After serving in Florida during the Seminole Wars, the regiment joined General Andrew Jackson's army for his march through Georgia in 1832. AfterRated 2nd Lt., Captain John Ladd became its 1st Lieutenant on July 10, 1830; it reverted to 2nd Lt./Captain on January 3, 1836 when Major Nathan Haines assumed command from Captain Ladd. In 1840-1841 service took them to Illinois where they fought against Native Americans at Peoria before returning home for winter quarters near Detroit later that year.
In February 1861, Company A (1st Battalion) was mustered into Federal service as part of 9th Michigan Volunteers at Fort Wayne under Colonel Augustus Mifflin Youngblood and served until October 1861 when they were mustered out at Camp Chase near Chicago after being attached to 1st Brigade Departmental Cavalry Corps under Brigadier General Ambrose Burnside. They were re-organized as Company B (2nd Battalion) on November 16th and served until August 1862 when they were disbanded due to lack of volunteers for active duty duringthe American Civil War while their battalion remained inactive at Camp Chase with no status changes until reactivated as Company C (3rd Battalion) effective September 13th 1865 by orderof Major General George Armstrong Custer after reconstruction following World War II ended with V-E Day

It is the most populous city in Wayne County and ranks as the second-most populous city in Michigan after Detroit. St. Clair Shores is home to Eastern Michigan University and two other universities. The community also contains a large shopping mall, an amusement park, a movie theater, and two professional sports teams: the Detroit Red Wings of the NHL and the Grand Rapids Griffins of Major League Baseball (MLB).

St. Clair Shores is a city in the U.S. state of Michigan, on the southern shore of Lake Huron. The population was 24,583 at the 2010 census. It is the county seat of St. Clair County and home to one of the largest concentrations of Catholic priests in North America. The early history of St. Clair Shores can be traced back to 1837 when Father John Nephew purchased land east of present-day downtown from George Wirtz for $1,600USD$. He named his new settlement after Saint Clair, an Irish martyr who had been martyred inBritain in 410 AD. By 1840, there were only 14 residents living in what is now downtown St. ClairShores; most people worked on Nephew's farm or built their homes around the bend on Lakeshore Road which ran through his property today. In 1871, Father John Nephew suffered a heart attack and died aged 80 years old; however, his work as a priest continued until he was succeeded by his brother-in-law Fransiskus Blixt (1875-1965). St. Clair Shores was founded by the French in 1810 as a trading post on the east side of the mouth of the St. Clair River. The town grew rapidly, becoming an important commercial and transportation center for the area. In 1834, it became a municipality with its own government and was renamed after Sir John A. Macdonald, Canada's first Prime Minister. During World War II, St. Clair Shores played an important role in shipbuilding and production of munitions, helping to build up Canada's military capability. After the war, the town went through a period of growth and development, becoming one of Michigan's most populous communities. In recent years, however, it has seen some declines in population and economic activity.
