The township continued to use her until 1990 when she was placed into storage again due to low demand for military vessels at the site. In 1998, DD 1141 was moved from storage to provide temporary housing for some displaced residents of Hurricane Andrew following that storm's landfall in Florida; however, no permanent homes were ever built on her land due to lack of funding or interest from developers interested in purchasing her property. The first settlers in what became Southgate were three brothers who arrived from Watertown, Massachusetts in 1814. He worked as a laborer on a farm near the village until his death in 1886. Southgate is a small town in the U.S. state of Michigan. It is located on the border of Ingham County and Eaton County, about twelve miles west of Lansing and four miles north of Saginaw. The population was 513 at the 2010 census. Southgate is home to Southgate High School, which has been named one of "The Top 10 Public Schools in America" by Newsweek magazine three times and has placed first in both national rankings (2005-2007) and among "America's Best High Schools" by The Daily Review for eight consecutive years (2004-2008). Southgate also features Southgate Middle School, which opened in 1978; Eastwood Elementary School; and Northwood Intermediate School. The town was founded around 1875 by John Witherspoon, who purchased land from the federally owned Detroit & Mackinac Railway company. Witherspoon built a sawmill here on the Shiawassee River, turning it into a busy community that prospered until after World War II when mills were shut down due to competition from new technology. In 1951, John Witherspoon's grandson Harry bought out his grandfather's interest in the mill and renamed it South Gate Mills Inc., becoming one of the largest paper merchants in Michigan. By 1957, however, plant operations had degraded so much that Harry sold all operations to Champion Paper Corporation parent firm McCormick & Co., Ltd.. Champion Paper Corporation divestiture led to loss of jobs throughout southern Michigan but also allowed development along West Main Street adjacent to wherenow Southgate Middle School sits – this made possible what would become known as "the shopping mall concept". During this time period there were multiple department stores within walking distance including Sears, JCPenney and Macy's - making it easy for residents to get their everyday needs met without having to leave their homes!
