Southgate is a small town in the U.S. state of Michigan. It is located about 20 miles (32 km) east of Lansing and 40 miles (64 km) south of Detroit on the South River. The population was 9,512 at the 2010 census. The first inhabitants of what is now Southgate were Native Americans known as the Potawatomi Indians. In 1812, United States General William Hull bought lands in the area from the Potawatomi, and built a log cabin here as part of his settlement that became Ann Arbor Township. The first general store in Southgate opened in 1814, and an academy was founded here in 1819 by Drs. Samuel Morse and Alfred Vail to educate young people for manual labor on white soil. In 1830, John Saginaw moved to Southgate from Battle Creek because he wanted to find a more fertile land for farming than what he had been living on north of Detroit. He established a tannery here and started selling leather products such as belts and shoes to customers outside of Michigan City at which time it was called Saginaw Valley Leather Company or Valley Tannery Company. A settler named Gideon Welles arrived in 1834 from Canada with his family, settling down near where Welles Flats now stand; he also farmed land around his house until 1840 when he sold it all to become oneofthe founders of what is today South gate Township."
Southgate was first settled in 1836 and post office was established in 1840. The townspeople voted to incorporate as a city in 1853. In 1865, the town became the county seat of Ottawa County. The population had grown to about 1,500 by 1870 when it merged with neighboring Stroudsburg to form Southgate-Stroudsburg. In 1907, Southgate-Stroudsburg amalgamated with Warren Township (now Mancelona) to form Mancelona Township.
