Southgate is a small town in the Grand Traverse County, Michigan, United States. The population was 2,622 at the 2010 census. Southgate is located near the mouth of Big Muddy Creek and east of I-94. It is part of the Kalamazoo–Port Huron metropolitan area. The town was founded in 1868 by Methodists who arrived from central Ohio after preaching there for several years. After Indian removal in 1833, most residents were white Protestant farmers who raised horses and hogs on their land until 1847 when they began to buy land north of Big Muddy Creek as well. In 1853 they built a log cabin on what is now Main Street and named it Southgate because it lay south of present-day Bridgeport Road on that side of the creek. They also founded a school which opened in 1870 and continued to serve until 1915 when it became East Middle School. In 1907, Southgate's first store was built onpresent-day Spring Street. That same year, voters approved annexation by the city of Kalamazoo with a vote of 54 to 30%. The city annexed all but one block (northwest corner) of Southgate Village including its post office buildings (1898), grocery store (1903), newsagent (1907), Masonic Lodge No. 527 (1920), Baptist Church (1925), and two schools: North Middle School (grades 7–8) and East Middle School(grades 9–12). After World War II, many factories closed down in southern Michigan including those in Southgate which lost many jobs during the war as aluminum manufacturing shifted from Detroit to Flint due to high labor costs associated with steel production allied with wartime demand for aluminum products According to 2000 census figures, about 60% of households were self-employed while 10% had businesses larger than $25K/year employing more than 50 people In recent years though some new businesses have begun up around town such as an agricultural supply store called "Farmington Farms" open since 2007; a fish market; "The Grit" cafe & grill serving breakfast & lunch daily; "Creekwood Ranch", homebuilders since 2006 featuring precast concrete homes being delivered direct from builders sites across America; real estate services company Townsquare Solutions LLP.; although it has been challenged by neighboring townships over issues like noise control measures posted adjacent property boundaries

Southgate is a small town in the rural area of Washtenaw County, Michigan, United States. The population was 1,811 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Ann Arbor–Warren-Dearborn Micropolitan Statistical Area. The first permanent settlement in what is now Southgate was made on July 4, 1819 by John Stephenson and his family after they were driven out of Battle Creek by Native Americans. They built a log cabin on the banks of the Ottawa River. In 1827, General James K. Polk sent a detachment under Colonel Fenton to settle what became Southgate Township. The township was organized on November 3, 1827 by Order of Secretary Adam Clayton Powell Jr.. On April 14, 1830, it was renamed for Major General Wayne Culp (1814-1875), who had commanded U.S. forces at the Battle of Fallen Timbers and successful campaigns in Mexico during the Mexican War of Independence (1846-48). In 1840 Southgate had 2 stores and 9 families; in 1850 it had 6 stores and 25 families; and in 1860 it had 12 stores and 50 families. On February 11, 1865, during World War II as part of Operation Overlord, American forces invaded Great Britain through North Africa to open up supply lines from Europe to American troops fighting in Europe theater. As part of this larger plan called "Eighth Army", Southgate was one objective that Allied forces hoped would be captured alive by Germans as leverage for peace talks prior to European liberation later that year or even longer than that. However negotiations failed resulting in an unconditional surrender which took place at about 5 am on May 8th 1945 just south of where Southgate now stands across from Fortiethousand Acres Agricultural Research Farm
In 1831, Southgate was incorporated as a town in Washtenaw County. The first settler to arrive in what is now Southgate was George Armstrong Cranch. In 1835, the first school was built here and it served the village of Southgate until 1840 when it moved to downtown Washtenaw. In 1846, a post office called Southgate was established and remained in operation until 1959. In 1861, the first railroad tracks were laid through town by the Michigan Central Railroad. In 1863, Sibley's Creek ran through town and washington mills were located on its banks. The population of Southgate grew rapidly during this time with many new residences being built along Sibley's Creek.
