The Marine Corps has a long and proud history in Southgate, Michigan. The city was once the home of the Marine Barracks, one of the largest military installations in the United States. The installation served as a barracks for Marines until it was closed in 2006. It is now used as a park. In 1916, Southgate became an official town within Michigan. In 1951, the Marine Barracks were reopened and served as headquarters for Marines stationed throughout Michigan. From 1966 to 1976, the Barracudas operated out of the Barracks as part of Marine Squadron One hundredth anniversary celebration ceremonies. Today, Marines are still garrisoned in Southgate and there are multiple detachments located throughout the state of Michigan. The town of Southgate, Michigan is located in the lower Peninsula region of Michigan. It is bordered by the city of Grand Rapids to the north, east, and south, the village of Westville to the west, and Cleveland Township to the northwest. The population was 3,713 at the 2010 census. Southgate was founded in 1837 by John Durnell and others as a small post office on a bend in River Road. In 1851 it became a town under statehood and was named for Southgate parish in London, England. The first mayor was Hiram Greenough. According to the United States Census Bureau, the town has a total area of , all land. As of the census of 2010, there were 3,713 people living in Southgate Township. Of these 2% were born outside of Michigan and 0% were foreign-born residents; 1% were from other parts of America; 98% are white (of any race). As reported by unofficial estimates as well asofficial government data released through decennial censuses conducted starting with 1870–2010*, whites make up 78% (or more) while non-white races make up 12%. Black or African American residents make up 1%, Native Americans 4%, Asian Pacific Islanders 2%, and two percentage points each from all other races* (*This estimate does not include anyone who self-identified as “white” since that definition changes every 10 years.) As reported through official censuses beginning with 1870–2011*, those numbers have remained essentially unchanged over this period: 79%.

Southgate is a small town in the Kalamazoo metropolitan area of Michigan, United States. The population was 7,521 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Lansing–Farmington–Battle Creek, MI Metropolitan Statistical Area. Southgate is located on the southern border of Mackinac County and is bordered by Delta Township to the east, Gratiot Township to the south, and Hillsboro Township to the west. Southgate was first settled in 1837 by English immigrants from London who were looking for land around what they thought would be a favorable location for farming. The township was organized that year and named after Sir George Southgate who had been governor of British India at that time. The community initially consisted of just a few homes and began trading with other villages in search of goods needed for their farmsteads such as wood and iron ore. In 1853, another group of English immigrants arrived in Southgate and started a tannery which still operates today as one of the town's most significant businesses. In 1872, when Mackinac County was created, Southgate became its county seat. By 1900, however, agricultural production had become more important to the local economy so SouthGate developed into an manufacturing center with many businesses associated with it including grain elevators (1892), foundries (1902), automobiles (1909), textiles (1920), breweries (1927), furniture factories (1929) and more recently electronic products companies such as Apple Incorporated and Lenovo Group Limited . Since 2000s much development has taken place in nearby Delta Township including several schools developments along with new shopping centers related to food processing/manufacturing industry such as Pinnacle Foods Company which opened up on former dairy property adjacent to Delta High School; now known as Delta State University .
In 1881, the first post office was established in Southgate. The town prospered and by 1907, it had a population of over 1,000 people. In 1951, Southgate became an incorporated municipality with a population of around 3,500 people. Southgate is currently located in the U.S. state of Michigan and has a population of about 11,500 people as of 2018.
