When that township merged with Washtenaw Township on December 1, 1969, Southgate became an unincorporated community within Dexter Township again. Southgate has a long history as a commercial center for eastern Michigans agricultural areas and its location makes it a natural place for businesses such as carpenters, electricians, plumbers and merchants who trade goods with surrounding communities. The town has also been home to several schools since its founding: Southgate School District No 2 (founded 1925), Dexter Middle School (formed 1953), Washtenaw High School (opened in 1961) and now Southgate Community College (opened in 1988). Since 2000, Southgate has been home to two annual events which are known as "The Festival of Trees" and "The Christmas Parade." Southgate, Michigan is a small city in the U.S. state of Michigan that is located on the south shore of Lake Huron. As of the 2010 census, the population was 8,866. The community began as a small town in 1871 and was incorporated as a village in 1901. Its name comes from its location on Southgate Peninsula, which lies between Detroit and Toledo on the western side of the lake. The first post office at Southgate was established in 1871, and remained in operation until it was discontinued in 1906. In 1901, Southgate became an incorporated village with a population of 154 people. It experienced significant growth during World War II due to its proximity to major munitions plants and naval yards situated nearby. In 1951, Southgate merged with neighboring Bedford to form one large municipality under the name Southgate-Bedford Township (later renamed Northwest Wayne Township). This merger created many new businesses and residents within the township who continued to reside there through subsequent censuses until 1984 when they were reclassified as part of Dearborn Heights Township again. Today, Southgate remains an agricultural center with significant livestock production both for local consumption and export; however, most manufacturing has moved out OFSTED over the past few decades due to competition from larger cities such as Detroit or Cleveland Ohio.
