Southgate is a town in Muskegon County, Michigan, United States. The population was 5,554 at the 2010 census. Southgate was founded in 1852 by John S. Southgate and his family. The community became a village in 1892 and then a town in 1907. It lost its status as a town when it merged with neighboring Beatrice to form Muskegon Heights on November 1, 1927. Southgate again lost its status as a town when it merged with neighboring Park Township to form Park-Southgate on January 1, 2009. The climate of Southgate is typical of Muskegon County, with warm summers and mild winters. Most weather events occur during summer months: thunderstorms are common during May through September; severe weather such as hurricanes or tornadoes are possible any time during the year; occasional floodsoccur during winter months; and snowfalls happen most often in December and February.

Southgate is a town in Muskegon County, Michigan, United States. The population was 5,521 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Detroit metropolitan area. The first settlers in what would become Southgate were Levi Coffin and his family who arrived from Newark, Delaware in 1815. They built a cabin on the banks of the Ottawa River some miles south of present-day Southgate. In 1827, John Coffin and his son-in-law Augustus Woodward established a trading post called "Fenway" on the Ottawa River which served as an important connection between Canada and the United States during this time period. A post office was established at Southgate in 1829, and remained in operation until it was discontinued in 1907. During the 1830s, small parcels of land were sold throughout Muskegon County for agricultural purposes by early settler George Waring. In 1836, Waring bought two hundred acres (80 ha) of land north of present-day Southgate from David Lappan and began to develop it into a farmstead known as "Waring's Run". A sawmill was erected on nearby Big Creek in 1840; blacksmithing became an important industry here during this time period due to the scarcity of available coal then located anywhere near rural areas such as Muskegon County. In 1846, James Kugel purchased 81 acres (300 ha) north of present day Southgate from David Lappan for $10 per acre ($2 million at current prices). This acquisition made Kugel one of northwest Michigan's largest landowners and gave him control over much valuable real estate withinMuskegon County limits. Kugel soon sponsored construction of several churches including Our Lady Of Mount Carmel Church which opened its doors on December 1st, 1847; it remains one of Michigan's most iconic landmarks today. He also donated land to be used for public schools including Grand Rapids High School now known as Dickenson Middle School & Northland Regional High School now known as Joe Louis Arena where he also resided at that time along with other wealthy individuals like Alfred Sloan who donated money towards building this facility while he still led Sears Roebuck & Co., one of America’s largest retail companies During these years many businesses were founded or relocated to downtown Detroit because there was no central business districtAvailable space had been limited by previous zoning laws which favored large commercial establishments near riverfronts & major highways rather than residences & villages suburban growth had begunKugel died suddenly unmarried sometime after 1850 leaving his vast property undistributed among his heirsThe township formed when late 19th century developments adjacent to downtownDetroit caused rapid population growth rates resulting from cheap labor available& lack thereof restrictive covenants against suburban development prevailed resulting in numerous tracts becoming parcels subdivision boundaries changed few streets remain original lot sizes gradually increased thru annexation additional facilities were annexed including school districts landfill became open for recreation WWII military base closed following end%20of war draft riots occur leading to Watts Rebellion In 1951 Township trustees voted unanimously to change their name back to Southgate Township
Southgate, Michigan was originally a part of the Upper Peninsula of Michigan. The area now known as Southgate was first populated by the Potawatomi people. When the United States acquired land in what is now Michigan, it included parts of the current county of Wayne and also included what is now Southgate Township. The town was founded by John Woolridge in 1836. In 1847, south of present-day Southgate, a small community called Mound City was established to serve as a depot for goods arriving from Illinois. In 1853, when Congress passed an act authorizing the erection of a military post on Lake Superior, Southgate Township became part of thatpost and received its own garrison. It remained an important military base until 1959. In 1903, during World War I, General George Custer's body was found at nearby Griggs Ford and news about his death spread quickly through the Midwest. The American Expeditionary Force (AEF) arrived in Battle Creek after traveling via Detroit and Southgate to reach Griggs Ford from Canada on July 20th; however they only discovered Custer's body four days later when they encountered German troops marching towards them from across Lake Superior. A large number of soldiers died in battle that day including many from South Gate Township which had 8 men killed including one white settler named Abram Kapp who had driven off Native Americans living around Mound City with firearms he had obtained permission to do so from their village chief.
