In 1922, the first Coast Guard Station in Southgate, Michigan opened its doors. The station was named after Captain George C. Smith who, with his ship the "Doris" had helped to establish the U.S. Coast Guard in 1918. The station was initially used for both search and rescue and law enforcement purposes. In 1938, the station became a barracks for the local police department which continued to use it until 1978 when it was purchased by Southgate Community Schools and converted into a school library. The coast guard gift history of Southgate began in 1978 when the school library was purchased by Southgate Community Schools from the Michigan State Police Department. At that time, it became one of only two community libraries in Michigan with a coast guard gift history dating back to 1922. Since 1978, when Southgate Community Schools’ School Library acquired its Coast Guard gift history from the Michigan State Police Department,Southgate has annually hosted an event called “Gift Giving Day at Sea” where students and staff can come together to celebrate Coastal Homecoming (the annual celebration recognizing our maritime heritage) and learn about local coastal communities’ customs and traditions related to gifting at sea. This year’s event will be held on Saturday, October 6th from 10am-12pm at our new library building located on Harbor Drive in south towne!

The Southgate Coast Guard Station was founded in 1915. It is the oldest continuously operating coast guard station in Michigan. The Coast Guard operates four other stations along the Great Lakes and one station on Lake Huron.
Southgate is a city in the U.S. state of Michigan, and the county seat of Kent County. The population was 31,521 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Detroit metropolitan area. The first permanent settler in Southgate was Nicholas Gist on July 24, 1824, when he purchased land from John Graves Simcoe for $2,000 cash. Southgate became a town on November 2, 1830, after voters approved a charter amendment that made it an incorporated village with limited powers. On December 12, 1833, voters passed another charter amendment to create a city with unlimited powers and privileges within the limits of Kent County; this change was ratified by the county board on February 10th of that year. The first mayor was George Burtis who served from January 1st 1836 until his death in 1841; thereafter David Davenport served as Mayor for 19 years (1846-1872). On October 4th 1840 Simeon Dearborn donated 80 acres (30 ha) east of town to become Southgate Parkland which still exists today as one of its main attractions One notable event during Mayor Davenport's tenure was the founding of North American College in 1949 which now bears his name. In 1955 City Councilmember John Cavanaugh proposed creating a park system around town center called "The Greenbelt" which would have included both new homes and public open space across three blocks from downtown including what is now Waterfront Park On May 5th 1957 Southgate restaurateur Edwin Kemper opened The Golden Nugget restaurant and tavern at 810 Main Street which remains today one of the most popular restaurants in town In 1974 Southern Grand Rapids Corporation filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy reorganization due to heavy debt loads associated with rapid expansion into new markets such as Flint Michigan while also experiencing competition from larger companies such as Yum! Brands Incorporated headquartered nearby in Royal OakMichigan In 1984 Township trustees decided not to pursue annexation by Southgate but instead voted to join neighboring Clinton Township through an agreement that prohibited annexation without approval from both townships' boards
The Coast Guard has been providing a service to the American people for over 80 years. The Coast Guard's mission is to protect navigation and maritime interests, prevent collisions between vessels, and support search and rescue operations. One of the most famous gifts the Coast Guard has given is its gift of lifejackets. These lifesavers help keep sailors safe while in contact with water or air. In 1907, the Coast Guard donated two life jackets to each member of the New York City Fire Department. This was followed by a donation in 1912 of 128 life jackets to Washington D.C.'sEMS (Emergency Medical Services) department. In 1975, the Coast Guard donated 1,500 life jackets to Cyprus' coast guard force as part of their celebration of international cooperation in law enforcement matters. In 1984, the Coast Guard gifted three patrol boats to Panama's navy as part of their Operation Neptune's Spear commemorations for World War II victory over Japan. That same year, they also gave four Life Boat Service (LBS) MH-60S helicopters to Peru’s navy as part of Operation Benigno Aquino III commemorating President Ferdinand Marcos’s birthday celebrations that year. In 1992, they donated five Life Jackets Model MH-65D Sharktooth helicopter equipment kits (LCM-3A), which are used for Search and Rescue missions from small craft on open waters near shorelines

Southgate is a town in the U.S. state of Michigan and has a population of 9,000. It was founded in 1824 by Daniel Southgate and his family. The town was named after Southgate, an early settler in the area. Southgate became a city in 1912 and it is currently the county seat of Oakland County. The name "Southgate" is also used for other places within the city limits such as Southgate Township and North Road (Michigan State Highway 10). The first white settlers to arrive in what is now Southgate were Daniel Southgate, his wife Catherine, their son George Washington, their daughter Sarah Jane, and their servant John Armstrong. The first buildings that were erected in what is now Southgate were a schoolhouse and a barn. In 1825, Daniel Southgate donated land to build a courthouse which would serve as the legal center for the township. That same year, he also donated land to become home to the first Masonic Lodge in Michigan. In 1827-28, Reverend James Sisson built a chapel on Park Avenue which served as both church and meeting hall for residents of southward village until 1902 when it burned down due to arson by students at nearby Ann Arbor University's College of architecture). Between 1824-1827, DanielSouth gate laid out two townships on his donation: Livingston Township west of Detroit (then part of Grand Rapids) and Clinton Township north of Detroit (now part of Hamtramck). Livingston Township was laid out according to Native American guidelines with four square miles each ruled by three chiefs; these squares formed what are now downtown sidewalks today. Clinton Township was laid out more like English country lanes with fivesquare miles each ruled by four knights; these squares formed what are now inner streets today within downtown areas Today’s Clinton Boulevard comes from this original layout where Parliament Street meets Woodward Avenue near campus today According to local legend there may have been up to seventy different Indian tribe groups living along or near present day Lake Huron including Oneida Nation who hunted game concessionarily here during Head Chief Pontiac’s time some say they settled south side Lots located just east off road between Shelby Road/State Route 514 & 7 Mile Rd also claimed Daniel Caruthers Sr came overland from Canada around 1800 via White Sands Pass then traveled through southern Michigan Landing Site on Lower Peninsula joining War ,Carpenter Creek Invasion group coming thru Great Lakes region many people moved into this area especially after great fire destroyed Detroit post office Sept 17 1789 lots still available believe its Mt Pleasant landing site
