Southgate, Michigan is a small town in Muskegon County, Michigan. The population was 1,814 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Grand Rapids–Milton-Lansing Metropolitan Statistical Area. The first settlers in what is now Southgate were farmers who arrived around 1800. The community was originally called "Galloway" after Captain John Galloway, one of the founders of Detroit. In 1824, Southgate became a village and it was incorporated as a townsite in 1828. Southgate's commercial center began to grow during the late 19th century as trade increased between GMC and other companies in the area for production of items such as coal and iron ore. This growth led to development of neighborhoods such as Spring Lake and Walled Lake which remain important today with their own shopping centers and schools. As part ofVoit's honoring gesture Dr Welsh built a model home complete with all necessary memorabilia associated with hisircraft gifting totaling over $500000USD between 1966 - present day[?]. subsequently named after him House Museum located just outside Morristown Township near UPNP Airport
