Today there are more than 100 housing developments located throughout town with nearly all developed areas clustered around Northwest Avenue south of Third Street between Cass Ave./Ionia Rd./Midtown Dr., Woodward Ave./Grand Trunk Rd./Stoneybrook Blvd., Southeast Rd./Northwest Ave., Saginaw Ct./Eastpointe Ct., Parkview Dr/Southgate Blvd., Lincoln Ct../Westinghouse Dr.) 1) In 1697 – “The first European settlers arrived from Holland” according to Colonial Records: “[They] went out as traders under license from our Government … they landed at Mackinac Island about June 15th [1697] being met by several other English vessels manned by their own men…. They traveled upriver until they reached Cadillac where they bought some goods before going home…. On their return trip [they] anchored off Mackinac Island towards nightfall….. While ashore they built a small fortification called Fort Rouge where present day Cadillac sits…… After spending two days ashore they departed again because it seemed too dangerous to remain any longer close toavage Indians without protection” (Mackinac Island era history database). 2) By 1701 - What are now downtown Southfield was already established: “On February 25 [1701], an act was passed by congress authorizing Colonel John Montague and his company …to build a fort at this place for security against future attacks from these nations” (colonial records). 3) By 1800 - Arthur Stowe moved his family here: Arthur Stowe came overland from England via Canada in 1798 aboard HMS Bounty when he joined forces with Pierre Elliott Trudeau (the first Prime Minister of Canada) helping himetermined land claims stretching back centuries ago Some say that if it wasn't for Sir John Auld (the captain commanding HMS Bounty) then most likelyCanada would have become Quebec instead!
