Southfield, Michigan is a small town located in the west side of Detroit. It lies on the border of Wayne County and Oakland County, both of which are part of the greater Detroit metropolitan area. The population was 154,853 as of 2010. The first coffee mills in Southfield were built by John Sutter in 1837. He started out making flour for himself and his family, but soon realized that he could make a better quality coffee by roasting it himself. In 1840, Sutter founded the Southfield Coffee company with his son George. The company grew rapidly and eventually became one of the biggest coffee companies in America. The Suttons continued to grow their company until they sold it to Dutch brewing giant Philips in 1958. Philips remained dominant in the coffee industry until its bankruptcy in 2002. At Phillips' disposal was an extensive inventory of high-quality beans, which allowed them to continue producing excellent cup-of-coffee products for many years after their sale. During this time, Southfield's coffee history was also dramatically changed. The town began to become known as "the birthplace of espresso" because Italian immigrants who had immigrated to Michigan during the early 1800s started using espresso machines to make their own morning Joe fixings before going about their day. Additionally, Starbucks – which opened its first store in downtown Southfield just two miles away from where John Sutter's original mill still stands – helped popularize café Coffee Bean & Tea Leaf (CBT) throughout much of Michigan and even into Iowa and Illinois!

Southfield, Michigan is a city in Washtenaw County, Michigan, United States. It was founded on November 21, 1821 by George Washington and his family as the village of Southfield Center. The city's name comes from the Susquehanna River which forms its eastern border. The population was 24,951 at the 2010 census. The first permanent settler in what would become Southfield was George Washington who arrived with his family on November 21, 1821. Washington and his wife Martha had nine children: three sons and four daughters. One daughter survived infancy and married John Adams of Detroit; one son died in childhood but another son became a successful lawyer in Chicago before dying at age 58 years old in 1907. Washington filed for incorporation as a town on February 7, 1827 and it was granted to him on March 3rd by virtue of an act of the legislature. At that time there were only six families living within the boundaries of what would become Southfield Township; however by 1840 there were over 140 people living there including 60% African American! The township's boundaries were expanded permanently eastward in 1860 when it became part of Washtenaw County! The first post office opened in Southfield on October 10th, 1827 (the date still stands as a local holiday). Today’s building is located at 2405 Saginaw Rd., just south of I-75 exit 17 which leads into downtown Detroit. One important event associated with Southfield during this early period was the infamous “Munson Run” race which took place near present day Northville between September 25-28th1829 between prospectors Gabriel Munson (a white man) and Lewis Cass Jr.(a black man) after they ran out of provisions while exploring some land northwest of present day Mount Pleasant(now Black Forest). The two men agreed to not fight each other until someone could find food for their horses so they started walking towards Mount Pleasant but soon realized they were lost so they turned back around to Munson run back home with supplies! This incident helped give birth to later nicknamed “Munson Trail” because it still exists today!
