South Lyon is located on the southern shore of Lake Huron and is part of the Lansing–Warren County Metropolitan Statistical Area. The town was founded in 1868 by John Fenton and named for his brother-in-law, Michael Lyons, also from Illinois. South Lyon grew rapidly during prohibition era due to its role as a supplier of liquor to bootleggers in eastern Michigan. The Prohibition Act repealed all federal prohibition laws in Michigan on July 1, 1933; however, liquor sales continued until January 1, 1934 under state law. In 1951 South Lyon became one of the first towns in Michigan to join the United States with no religious restrictions against persons thereof while still maintaining its own independent government; this act led to other municipalities joining or adopting similar policies throughout the state over time. South Lyon is a city in the southwestern corner of Wayne County, Michigan, United States. The population was 7,653 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Detroit metropolitan area. The town was platted in 1855 by Daniel Dinsmore and his wife Annabella Dinsmore, who also founded South Lyon Township. The first post office opened in 1857 and was called "Lyon". In 1865, the township was renamed to "South Lyon Township", after its location on the south side of Michigan River. The township's namesake, John Fenton South Lyon (1825–1912), served as a U.S. Representative from Michigan from 1896 to 1912 and as mayor of South Lyon from 1902 to 1912. In 1898, two years after becoming Mayor of South Lyon, Fenton donated land for what is now M-I-T-H Elementary School which replaced an earlier schoolhouse that had been destroyed by fire in 1892. Today M-I-T-H Elementary School serves grades PreK through 8th grade and is located onstate Route 9 north of downtown South Lyon. In 1907, John Fenton Jr., son of John Fenton Sr., donated land for what is now Midland High School which replaced an earlier high school building that had been destroyed by fire in 1906. Today Midland High School serves grades 9th through 12th grade while its campus lies just east of Interstate 95 near Exit 246A off I-95W near Renaissance Boulevard exit 244B/Merrill Road intersection
Lake Michigan was the original name for South Lyon. The area now known as South Lyon was first settled by Indians in the 1800s. In 1814, General Lewis Cass called this area "South Lyon Township", after his family's home in what is now Detroit. This township was established mostly by Methodists and Baptists. However, a small group of Germans also lived in South Lyon from the late 1800s until around 1925. In 1847, the village of South Lyon was founded on the west side of Saginaw Bay, about northwest of where it is today. The village grew up around a Methodist Episcopal church and schoolhouse that were built between 1846 and 1848. In 1870, when Saginaw County was organized, South Lyon became part of it. The town began to grow rapidly after its incorporation as a municipality in 1907. By 1912, it had a population of over 1,000 people. During World War I (1914-18), South Lyon contributed personnel to both the American Expeditionary Force and the United States Army Air Service; both services used their facilities at nearby Miamisburg Arsenal to produce munitions and airplanes respectively. When World War II started, South Lyon responded quickly with production of munitions such as artillery shells and rockets; however, due to wartime restrictions on exports, its output only amounted to 1 percent of overall Michigan production. Nevertheless, through 1944-1945 alone, North America produced more bombs than any other country during that time period - mainly thanks to German procurement efforts (which were frustrated by Allied intelligence).
