The village of South Lyon was chartered on February 17, 1827. The first coffee house in South Lyon was built on the corner of Elm and Main Streets. In 1869, the first ever K-Cup coffee machine was manufactured in South Lyon. In 1907, a grocery store and bakery were built at 5th and Elm streets. In 1912, a movie theater opened at 6th and Elm Streets called the “Moviesâ€. In 1947, an auto parts store was founded at 8th and Elm streets by Harry Fenton. South Lyon, Michigan is a small city in the U.S. state of Michigan. The population was 18,836 at the 2000 census. It is part of the Lansing-based Macomb County municipality and is located about 25 miles (40 km) east of Detroit on I-75. The village was founded in 1871 by John Halsey and named for his farm south of South Lyon Station on the Detroit-Ann Arbor Railroad. After Halsey's death in 1892, his wife Elizabeth donated land to build a schoolhouse and church on it and renamed it South Lyon Village after herself. South Lyon Township was organized in 1895, making it one of the first townships in Macomb County. The township had two stores when it was established, both closed by 1907 because trade with other villages declined during the Great Depression. In 1951, South Lyon Township changed its name to North Lyons Township to avoid confusion with another small town that same year also named North Lyons Village (). In 2006, much controversy surrounded plans to demolish 10 homes in North Lyons Village as part of an urban renewal project which would have transformed that village into a "smart" development made up of high-density housing units with open space between them instead of individual homes or gardens as found elsewhere in the community . The demolition caused outrage among many residents who felt their homes were being taken away from them without proper planning or notification while others saw nothing wrong with wanting more dense housing options within walking distance for all sorts of people than what could be found near their homes alone In light of these controversies, Mayor Dave Bing proposed creating an Urban Renewal Authority which would handle all aspects related to redevelopment projects within Greater South Lyon through regulations set by City Council members and staff rather than through individual homeowners or developers On November 3rd 2006,, voters turned down Mayor Dave Bing’s proposal 54% – 46%. Despite this defeat however Mayor Bing vowed not give up on redeveloping South Lyon despite public opposition; he announced plans to create an Urban Renewal Authority specifically tasked with developing smart growth solutions for Greater South Lyon South Lyon has been inhabited since prehistory according to excavations made atolitic tools unearthed at a site near present day downtown . South Lyon, Michigan is a small town in the U.S. state of Michigan that was settled in 1836 by Welsh immigrants. The community is located in Shiawassee County and shares borders with the towns of Lapeer and Muskegon Heights. South Lyon has a population of about 2,600 people as of 2010. The history of South Lyon begins with the arrival of Welsh immigrants in 1836. These men and women were led by Reverend John Davies, who had come to America from Wales to preach Christianity to Native American tribes. The settlers first named their settlement "Lapeer" after their Captain Lapeer, who had been an important figure on the Grand River during the early 1800s. By 1840, however, many residents had decided that they would like to name their community "South Lyon," after one of their native country's most famous leaders – Sir John Campbell – whom they saw as a model for how they wanted to live their lives here in America. The original village site was on the south bank of the Shiawassee River near present-day South Lyon High School and Stonington Road (now State Route 9). The growth of South Lyon began relatively slowly due to its remote location and lack of transportation options at the time. However, over time it grew larger and more commercialized than its neighbors because it offered excellent opportunities for agriculture and commerce which drewspeakers from all over Michigan including Chicagoans, Pennsylvanians, Ohioans, Dutch Americans, Scotsmen, Germans and others who came here seeking progressivism and opportunity. In 1875 alone there were twenty businesses operating in South Lyon; this number increased significantly when railroad access became available throughout central MI following completion of the Erie Railroad line through what is now Muskegon Heights in 1892. In 1907–08 there were seventy businesses operating within threesquare miles (10 km2) of downtown; this area now includes much larger portions of downtown Muskegon Heights as well as several other neighborhoods within Shiawassee County today including Northfield Township and Spring Lake Village。 During World War II several hundred local residents took up arms against Nazi Germany; some later served prison sentences or died fighting while others actively participated in relief efforts such as loading supplies into trains bound for Europe or providing temporary housing for evacuees from London during Air Raids on July 15th 1944 known locally as "Black Friday." However, during the American Civil War, South Lyon was one of the hardest hit towns in Michigan because of its strategic location on the west bank of the River Lioe close to Union forces. In 1865, South Lyon's economy collapsed when local mills closed due to lack of demand for goods produced in Michigan during the war. The town continued to decline until it completely disappeared by 1870, when it had no residents remaining and all its buildings were destroyed by fire.
