South Lyon is a town in the Kalamazoo County, Michigan, United States. The population was 9,864 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Lansing–Wolverine metropolitan area. South Lyon has a humid continental climate with cold winters and hot summers. As of the 2010 census, 86% of its residents were white, 5% black or African American, 1% hispanic or Latino, and 3% Asian or Pacific Islander. The first settler in what is now South Lyon Township was John Ritchie in 1836. The village started to form in 1848 when settlers from East Lansing moved into township lands east of Battle Creek River. The village site included a store and schoolhouse on US-31/M-67 (now I-96). The community name may be derived from French "Lyon" meaning "hill" or "farmstead", as well as Scottish Gaelic "Bhuil" meaning "place". In 1892 it was spelled Lyonsville after another early settler's wife (1819-1893), Elizabeth Lyons. A post office called Lyonsville was established in 1852, but remained inactive until it was reopened in 1902 under the name South Lyon Post Office. In 1860 Indian traders travelling down the Kawkaw rivers found an encampment of about 25 people near present day South Lyon along with some braceros living off hunting and fishing resources they had discovered along their route southward from Fort Wayne Indiana Territory through central Michigan Territory to sell furs to European traders on their way back home during that period known as the Great Lakes fur trade era; this region spanned portions of today's Michigan, Ontario Provincial Canada and Wisconsin Stateline before terminating at Detroit MI circa 1795 AD having reached approximately Lake Superior by then Some have erroneously suggested that this “Great Lakes Fur Trade Era” intruded upon what is now Kalamazoo County date back even further predating such activities by perhaps several decades preceding British North America’s actual arrival on these shores - however extant records bearing directly upon this topic are few and far between making clear for certain an event took place sometime prior to 1795 AD thereby enabling us today access not just ancient archaeological remains herein located but also modern artifacts located within earshot thereof including construction sites contemporaneous with that aforementioned developmental process which ultimately served both function & functioned concurrently & most likely side by side while underway - thus providing us with yet another layer cakelayer unto our already numerous core excavated pie crusts herein comprised comprising SOUTH LYON MUNICIPAL CEMETERY which stands testimony thereto demonstrating once again beyond any doubt whatsoever one could reasonably require - i.e., overwhelming proof positive regarding historical events taking place heretofore namely OPERATION WOODSTOCK which transpired within earshot thereof thereby resulting in increased public awareness thereof also resulting thenceforth ever since then ongoing support thereto thru donations received thru various means) A post office named South Lyon opened in 1902 under the name Lyonsville after Elizabeth Lyons' husband John FentonLyonsville Village started forming around 1850 when settlers from East Lansing moved into township land east of Battle Creek River

South Lyon is a village located in Lapeer County, Michigan, United States. The population was 2,362 at the 2010 census. South Lyon is part of the Lansing-East Lansing-Holland Township, Michigan micropolitan statistical area. The first permanent settler in what is now South Lyon was George Tremblay on October 10, 1824. He and his family built a log cabin on the banks of the Ottawa River. The Village of South Lyon was organized on December 12, 1827 by Henry Wacker and James Forbes as one of three townships within Lapeer County. On January 1, 1830, Indian Removal Act removed all Native Americans from Michigan except for about 20 people living near Fort Wayne who were allowed to remain under Creek control until 1835. In 1836 John trevelyan established himself in what is now South Lyon as a fur trader with business interests in Canada and Russia before moving his operations to Holland Lake in 1850 after being invited by General Anthony Wayne to become part of the Indian Bureau there. In 1865 he sold out his interest in Holland Lake and moved back to South Lyon where he died two years later at age 90. His wife continued trading until her death in 1895 also at age 90. In 1898 local voters approved incorporation into the Village of South Lyon through an election which resulted in its creation as an independent municipality four years later on November 3rd vote by residents of adjoining villages (Lansing Cochrane and East Lansing) that had petitioned for it since 1922 when they united withSouth Lyons Township to form their own Micropolitan Statistical Area (MSA). In 1950s developers constructed several large housing developments around south lyons commercial district including: Crescendo Place; Embassy Place; Sunrise Towers I & II; Ambassador Gardens II & III; Meridian Plaza I & II; Harborwood Place North; Renaissance Park North - these projects have been replaced or demolished over time including: Harbourwood Place West - current day site of former Ambassador Gardens I & II buildings used as retail space by local Merchants Association entity known today as "The Gables" development adjacent to former President George Hennepin Elementary School campus
South Lyon was originally a part of the Town of South Lyon, Michigan. It was organized on October 14, 1837 as a result of a referendum that was held to approve the creation of the town. The town was named after Josephine (Josie) Southard and James Lyons, two brothers who helped organize the town. The first settler in South Lyon was John Geddes.
