South Lyon is a small city in the U.S. state of Michigan, located about 20 miles south of Detroit on the eastern edge of the Lower Peninsula. The population was 9,711 at the 2010 census, up from 8,812 in 2000. South Lyon is part of the Muskegon Heights–southwest Muskegon County Metropolitan Statistical Area. The first European to visit what is now South Lyon was Nicholas-Jacques Conte on October 11, 1795 while exploring Lake Superior as part of his survey for a new fur trade route through present-day Michigan and Canada. The name "Lyon" means "the place where a wagon wheel comes off." The first post office in this area was established in 1819 by George Stephenson with the name "Newburgh". It was renamed South Lyon in 1827 after John Fenton Overstreet, who became United States Senator from Michigan and served from 1830 to 1837 and again from 1840 to 1848. Industry began developing around mills powered by water power near Newburgh; however it wasn't until 1892 that an electric plant was built here and it remains one of America's oldest electric utilities. In 1902 entrepreneur/mayor George Kapp set out to create a modern township when he bought land east of town for $1 per acre (in comparison today's prices run into several thousand dollars). He named it after himself: South Lyon Township (now Muskegon Heights Township) Incorporation No. 1 filed November 6, 1902 under penalties of perjury with Secretary of State Blaine vs Whitehead et al., case no 5489/82 – also known as Journal 2 or Wayne v Whitehead et al., decision reversed on appeal [3]. South Lyon has experienced many changes over its history including being annexed by neighboring Muskegon Heights in 1931; becoming an all-white municipality during prohibition; becoming majority minority Hispanic residents during the late 1970s following large waves of immigration; seeing rapid growth due to auto production during World War II followed by declining activity starting in thelate 1960s; experiencing significant transformation following enactment ofioxidation laws later called “Clean Air Act” which led to increased business investment and lasting jobs throughout most if not all industries ensuing throughout decades subsequent theretofore undetected Today South Lyon still retains some pockets of pre-industrial architecture with homes dating back before 1889 such as Lackawanna Mills across Street #2 from initial plat map prepared for village form dated Apr 1886 - see website link below for more information Additionally there are many small businesses that have sprung up since incorporation like Morningside Services which offers vehicle wash services along side dry cleaning and waxing services within walking distance ; West Side Grocery provides groceries & convenience items inside & outside store along with gas station attached

South Lyon, Michigan is a small town located in the Muskegon County, Michigan area. It was founded on February 17, 1834 by Major John Sibley and Captain James White. The post office was established in South Lyon on that date. The current community of South Lyon was organized in 1867 by David M. Kelley and others. The first settler to arrive in what is now South Lyon was Major John Sibley. He and his wife, Sarah Jane (Ferguson), arrived from Boston on October 8, 1827 with their six children. They built a log cabin near the present day intersection of Huron and Washtenaw Streets. South Lyon had its start as a farmstead called "Moses". In 1835, Elisha Phelps moved to this area with his family and started farming corn, soybeans, wheat and other crops. He later became a justice of the peace for Muskegon County and served until his death in 1865. In 1868-69, Reverend Ezra Stiles visited South Lyon while he preached at the Methodist church north of town. When he returned to visit occasionally during those years, he began purchasing land around South Lyon from farmers for use as farmland or for his own ranch house which he named after himself – Stiles Heights (now part of Northville). Reverend Stiles also donated some land to build an Episcopal church which had been proposed but not built when he left office in 1870; it still stands today adjacent to Interstate 94 just east of South Lyons High School on Huron Street/Route 11 Road between Milepost 619 (now milepost 628) and Milepost 660 (now milepost 631). Ezra Stiles Elementary School opened its doors in 1925; it has been known as East Side Elementary School ever since! Reverend Ezra Stiles' son Edwin Haskins became principal of East Side Elementary School after his father's death in 1942; he remained there until retirement in 1984!
