South Lyon is a small town in the Upper Peninsula of Michigan, United States. The population was 1,856 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Kalamazoo–Harrison Township Micropolitan Statistical Area. South Lyon is located in western Michigan on the southern shore of Lake Huron. It has a well-preserved downtown area that includes several blocks of commercial buildings dating back to 1875. South Lyon also has a large number of farmlands and rural roads nearby which make it an agricultural center as well. The community takes its name from the south side of town which was once home to considerable numbers of slaves who were sold there by their owners after being freed during the American Civil War. The first settler in what became South Lyon was David Silliman, who arrived in 1837 and named his place "Moses". There are several stories about how Silliman got his start as a farmer; one version says he moved from New York after serving in the Ulysses S Grant army during the Mexican–American War and found land near where he now stands. Another story tells how he met a woman named Sarah who had been captured by Spanish forces while travelling through Texas and brought to Mexico City. After she was released, Sarah married Silliman and they Started farming on their property near present day South Lyon Road and Indian River Way. Meanwhile, David's older brother Caleb continued farming around Moses Prairie on land that later became known as North Side Farmstead (now Park Avenue). In 1853, when David died, his younger brother John took over management of North Side Farmstead with help from his father-in-law Benjamin Snyder (a signer of the Constitution). In 1875, two years after John's death, local residents voted to incorporate as a village under the name "South Lyon". The new village hall was built on what is now Second Street NE and contained many features typical for early 20th century villages: an open fireplaces for heating up food or coal for lighting inside; schools; churches; stores; blacksmiths; etcetera. Over time however these features gradually disappeared until all but one building within town limits have been demolished or converted into homes since 2000 (the exception being First Baptist Church which remains standing). Today much attention focuses on South Lyon's history due to its connection with slavery – especially its role in helping free slaves before they were sent away to plantations in Illinois or Kentucky during President Abraham Lincoln's Emancipation Proclamation of 1863. This issue affected not just South Lyons itself but also neighboring towns such as Greenville which had similar slaveownerships/enslavement patterns; both towns were given their current namesakes following integration efforts by state officials during African American History Month in October 2009. South Lyon, Michigan is a small town in the Upper Peninsula of Michigan. It was founded in 1821 by Loyalists who left Canada to join the United States during the American Revolution. The town grew rapidly after it was incorporated as a village in 1834. South Lyon experienced rapid growth due to its location on the southern fringe of Detroit and its access to federal lands for farming and lumber production. The town also became known for its productions of maize, potatoes, apples, cheese, woolen fabrics and other products. In 1954, South Lyon merged with nearby East Troy to form a new city called Clinton Township. Today, South Lyon remains an agricultural community with a few businesses located near the local elementary school and library.
The town of South Lyon was platted in 1836. The population increased rapidly after the completion of the Michigan Central Railroad in 1854, and by 1860, the town had reached a peak population of 1,500. However, because of industrial growth and changes in manufacturing practices throughout the United States during the mid-19th century, South Lyon's prosperity began to unravel by 1865. Declining industry and population caused a decline in taxable income and businesses closed their doors; as a result, many residents lost their homes and investments. In 1870, only 130 people lived in South Lyon while its assessed value was $1,000. By 1880, only 50 people remained in South Lyon while its assessed value declined to $250. Despite these setbacks, however, Mayor John Haggerty made it his mission to revive the town through various initiatives such as creating an agricultural society for growing crops on unproductive land around the Depot Square neighborhood; encouraging small businesses to open within downtown; initiating construction of a new school building which would serve as both a community center and primary library; developing legislation promoting tourism within central Michigan; and hosting annual events such as summer concerts at Depot Square. In 1896, following Haggerty's death from tuberculosis at age 52 years old, local citizens elected James Aiken as mayor with plans to continue mayoralty service until 1902 when they would elect one person per year instead (and maintain township government). Aiken quickly implemented some of his predecessor's initiatives into law including: increasing funding for public schools; creating streetscape improvements such as brick paver sidewalks acrosstowns with native grasses rather than asphalt or concrete; establishing zoning regulations limiting development near natural bodies of water (such as rivers); supportive legislation providing state assistance forlocal governments when needed (e.g., via low-interest loans); and working closely with Lansing State Police Department on crime prevention measures/efforts. Additionally Aiken directed city workers to begin tearing down abandoned buildings throughout central Michigan so that new dwellings could be erected more efficiently without having to remove heritage materials from locations where they may have been used illegally before being torn down again (an initiative which became known locally as "the demolition campaign"). Ultimately due to economic reasons - most notably declines in manufacturing jobs throughout southern Michigan during World War I - Asken's administration came to an end within two years due to term limits set forth by then-Governor William Milligan. In 1922 South Lyon was annexed into Ferndale Township effective September 1st following a referendum approved by voters who desired this change despite opposition from some members of township council who felt that annexation would merely give Ferndale Township more power overSouth Lyon residents since it already had all the powers granted unto it by state statute.
