South Lyon is a city in Wayne County, Michigan, United States. The population was 7,691 at the 2010 census. It is the most populous city in Wayne County and the second-most populous city in Michigan after Detroit. South Lyon is part of the Detroit–Warren–Dearborn Metropolitan Statistical Area. The first French settlers in what is now South Lyon were named La Salle because they landed on an island near present-day SpencerPoint Light and built their first cabin there on July 4, 1789. On that date, Pierre Marquette and his party of Jesuit missionaries reached this area from Mackinac Island south of Lake Huron. They named their new land la Salle Township after this group's leader, Jean-Baptiste La Salle (1719–87). The first post office in South Lyon was established on October 29, 1805 by JF Lacombe with name "Lamothe". In 1831, James Dolan founded a tannery here and became one of the early leaders of the Wolverine industry. In 1881 he donated land for a public school district which became known as South Lyon Township Schools; it remains one of America's oldest educational districts still operational today. After World War II many companies closed but more began to open up as manufacturing declined throughout much of North America during that time frame; however, South Lyon experienced strong economic growth following its incorporation as a municipality in 1995 when all municipalities within Wayne County were created excepting Dearborn Heights which had been unincorporated since its creation days as part of Oakland County. The current City Hall building was completed in 1998 using funds raised by local businesses via special sales tax referendum passed two years earlier while also incorporating other improvements such as world-class library/cafeteria/community center addition(s) along with renovated substantial streetscape including new sidewalks and streetlights just north of Elmhurst Road (the old route US 131 followed until it was rerouted around 2010), giving South Lyon a truly integrated downtown core complete with cultural attractions and nightlife options not found elsewhere within metropolitanDetroit or any other major U S city similar size or even close to having them! The revitalization effort has resulted in job growth over the past several decades while maintaining high quality livability standards for both citizens and visitors alike making it one OF THE MOST LOVABLE CITIES IN AMERICA!!!
In 1837, Michigan was organized as a state. South Lyon, named for General John P. Dearborn, became the first village in that state. The first settler in what is now South Lyon Township was George Weigel, who arrived in 1838. In 1840, the township was organized into two lots and named after General Dearborn. The first post office in town was established in 1845 and it was called Dearbornville. It moved to its current location in 1865.
