The United States Air Force gift history in South Lyon, Michigan began in 1945 with the purchase of a Boeing P-47 Thunderbolt fighter aircraft. It was during this time that the USAF formed its first flying wing, which was made up of fighter and bomber pilots. The Thunderbolt became an iconic symbol of the USAF and has been used throughout the years to conduct air combat operations around the world. In 1957, South Lyon residents voted to make their city an official Air Force base. This decision led to the construction of a new airfield and hangar complex known as Wright-Patterson AFB. The facilities have continued to be used by the USAF ever since. Today, Wright-Patterson AFB is home to more than 4,000 military personnel and their families as well as thousands of civilian employees who support them in their missions across many different aspects of our military community. In 1967, South Lyon voters passed a resolution recognizing Aerospace Industries Incorporated (AII) as their local business partner for providing parts and services for UH-1 Hueys operated by the USAF’s Ninth Air Force Training Group at nearby Griggs Field Airport. AII would continue to provide key contributions throughout these years as part of Aeromere Incorporated (AMI), a holding company controlled by South Lyon Mayor John Hickenlooper and other city officials that acted as umbrella organization for many local businesses involved in aerospace production. AMI would eventually become Lockheed Martin Corporation after it merged with Martin Marietta Company on Feb 24, 2013.

South Lyon, Michigan is a small town in the Kalamazoo-Portage County metropolitan area, located on the shores of Lake Michigan. The population was 1,859 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Grand Rapids-Kalamazoo-Wolverine Metropolitan Statistical Area. South Lyon is known for its cliffs and beaches which are popular with tourists and locals alike. The first settlers to what is now South Lyon were farmers who arrived in 1837. By 1870, there were only three houses remaining in the village. In 1912, a post office was established in what is now South Lyon and it remained in operation until 1959. The first school in South Lyon was built on land donated by Mrs. Anna Burtch and opened in 1857. The present day elementary school building was built between 1927 and 1929 as part of a larger project to improve public education throughout the township. The $100,000 project included an addition that housed a gymnasium and several classrooms as well as a shop and barn capable of seating 100 students grades K-12. In 1976, voters passed a Resolution authorizing the establishment of an arts center which would become known as Southern Arts Center (SAC). SAC had its inaugural performance on July 29th, 1977 with music from Joe Bonamassa to Sonny Rollins under the direction of Art Director Donny Piscatelli Sr.. during their residency at DeVos Place Theatre Company facilities located next door to FirstMerit Banknorth across Ionia Street from today's high school campus; both buildings still exist within SAC boundaries today!
The United States Air Force has a rich history of giving gifts. Many different types of items have been given to the USAF, both in the form of money and other items. Gifts have ranged from small tokens to large pieces of equipment. One of the earliest gifts given by the USAF was what is now known as an "airman's gift." This gift was a token or decoration that was given to members of the military for their service in military conflicts such as World War II. The first airman's gift was issued in 1941. It consisted of two silver coins, each weighing about one-eighth ounce (25 grams). These coins were called "airmen's little medals." In 1945, General Curtis LeMay gave Congress a gold watch as a gift for its role in helping make World War II possible. The watch had been designed by Swiss jeweler Armin Klingelhofer and cost $10,000. In 1957, Colonel Emilio Castillo made a presentation toMQ-4C Skymodel aircraft pilots on behalf of President Eisenhower with three large cigars - one for each pilot - as part of his Christmas present for them. Since its inception, the USAF has bestowed many different types of awards and decorations on various individuals and units within its organization. Awards include: Order Of Merit (1941), Silver Star Medal (1944), Bronze Star Medal (1948), Air Medals (1960), Distinguished Flying Crosses (1942-1945), Legion Of Merit Award(1964-1968) and Purple Heart Medal(1966-1970). South Lyon is a city in the U.S. state of Michigan, and part of the Grand Rapids metropolitan area. The population was 11,852 at the 2010 census. It is the county seat of Wayne County. South Lyon falls within the Monroe Township borders of Washtenaw County. The first European Americans to reside in what is now South Lyon wereanti-native American settlers led by John Doane who arrived in 1837 from Ohio. By 1851, there were 4 square miles (10 km²) in what was then village territory and 2 more square miles (6 km²) beyond that included present day South Lyon Township and all of present-day Washtenaw County. In 1857, as part of larger land grants given out to white farmers east of Detroit, US President James Buchanan awarded 5 1/2 acres (20 hectares) for a church and school on White Road near today's intersection with I-94 and Saginaw River north of town center." In 1871, when it became clear that a railroad would be built through town from Lansing to Grand Rapids, promoters lobbied for the name "South Lyon" to be used instead due to its location away from other towns on either side of the tracks creating an isolated community with no commercial or social opportunities available elsewhere on the route." It wasn't until 1915 when South Lyon's first post office opened after years of planning by campaign organizers including Jesse Hutton who served as treasurer for Wayne County during this time frame." One early resident Juanita Wideman recalled:"We had no schools then so we taught our children at home...But when we got word about the railroad coming through we all went downtown to see if they had any seats left...We found out they did not have any seats so we sent our children down there with bucket hats on because that was how much money we had saved up." In 1916 an act passed by Congress designated Washtenaw County as one unitary authority which gave rise to local government structure similar to that found throughout Michigan." In 1925, following passage by Republican governor James Murtaugh Jr., south central Michigan became a new region within new Charlevoix County established through statewide expansion plans resulting in less autonomy for individual counties within Michigan…."
South Lyon, Michigan was first settled in 1836 by Henry Young and his family. The town of South Lyon was platted in 1855 by the Railroad Commission of America. The town was named after General Robert E. Lee who served as a colonel in the Confederate army during the American Civil War. South Lyon became a city in 1907 and retains that name to this day. In 1916, South Lyon was merged with neighboring Westville to form an all-city municipality. In 1934, the City Council passed a resolution creating a park system within the city limits which is still in effect today.
