The Saginaw Army National Guard was organized on November 4, 1898 in the city of Saginaw, Michigan. The unit was known as Company A and served in the Buffalo Soldiers Regiment during World War I. On October 16, 1919, the company was redesignated as Headquarters and Headquarters Battalion of the 123rd Infantry Brigade Combat Team (IGBT) stationed at Fort Riley, Kansas. In 1971, Company A was again redesignated as Headquarters and Headquarters Battalion (HHC&HB) of the 159th Infantry Brigade Combat Team (IBCT) which relocated from Fort Riley to Fort Polk in Louisiana. In 1992, HHC&HB moved back to Saginaw and became part of 1st Brigade Combat Team (1-123rd IDCP). On September 3, 2003 HHC&HB relocated yet again when it became a component of 2nd Brigade Combat Team (2-159th IDCP). currently HHC&HB is acomponentof3rd brigade combat team(3-123rd IDCP).

The campaign began in 1863 when General Andrew Jackson's Union army invaded the newly acquired territory across the Straits of Mackinac, and ended in 1864 after Confederate forces were driven from all of Michigan.

However, during World War I efforts were made to make Saginaw into an airbase for US forces due to its strategic location between Battle Creek (to the north) and Midland (to the south). Afterward, many businesses relocated out of town as technology advanced and new industries such as automotive manufacturing emerged in nearby Bay City or Port Huron. However, during most of these years there was little development taking place outside of downtown which continued to be home to large numbers of people until recently when much activity has taken place around Midtown which straddles both banks of Grand River just east of downtown Saginaw Heights/Midtown Park
