The city was founded by the Romans in the late 4th century BC, and it became a municipium (city) in 45 BC. In 588 AD, Romulus was sacked by the Goths, and it disappeared from history. However, the ruins of Romulus remain a point of interest to scholars today. The Roman city of Romulus was located on a small island in the river Lhersones north of modern-day Ann Arbor. The island had two other settlements: Veii and Remus. The island also served as an important military base for Rome because it overlooked much of their territory on the east side of Lake Huron. Rome first arrived in Michigan during the late 4th century BC when they began their expansion into what is now Michigan Territory. They built a small town near present-day Ann Arbor called Veii after they removed some Native Americans from that area. However, little else is known about Romulus or Veii beyond what has been found at its ruins nonetheless. In 45 BC, Romulus became a municipium under Augustus Caesar’s rule following his victory over Mark Antony and Octavian in battle at Actium [in 31 BC].
