Since the inception of the modern navy, it has been an essential part of the maritime world. The navy has always been a powerful institution and its deployment in times of peace and war has given it an invaluable role. There are a number of different types of naval forces that have been deployable to fight in wartime, but the most famous and well known type is the Navy SEALs. The navy’s first unit was created during World War I when American sailors volunteering for service were sent to Great Britain as part of their larger effort to help repel German invaders. During World War II, the navy again saw itself called into action when Japan began its military expansionism and started planning attacks on Allied shipping. The United States had initially sympathized with Japan but ultimately sided with the Allies against Japan because they felt that Japanese aggression was motivated by self-interest rather than a desire to attack America or any other ally. After Japan’s surrender, many American sailors who had served in Japan returned home and volunteered for service in various branches of the US military. One such sailor was Tommy Franks who volunteered as a seaman with USS Oklahoma (1941). Franks later recalled his experience during World War II: “I remember being on board USS Oklahoma at Pearl Harbor and seeing all those ships go down—the USS Missouri (1941), USS Lexington (1942), USS Saratoga (1945)—just devastating damage done by Japanese bombs”[1]. This event helped change American public opinion towards using nuclear weapons in warfare after Hiroshima and Nagasaki which would eventually lead to America's entrance into World War III.[2] Eventually, Naval Special Warfare Training Units were formed which would become known as Navy SEALs upon their enlistment into service. In 1969, Rear Admiral John Dyson became Commandant of Naval Special Warfare School where he devised new ways for US sailors to engage targets underwater including developing night operations submarines[3]. Around this time also came about another branch within the marine corps called Marine Forces Reserve who would serve as a backup force should something happen to regular marines while on active duty[4]. These units would eventually merge together becoming Marine Infantry Battalion aka 3rd MEB following their activation from reserve status in 1970[5]. As submarine warfare continued becoming more advanced throughout both wars, so too did Naval Special Warfare training techniques which led to increased success rates when engaging targets underwater[6]– making them one of only two special forces units sanctioned by NATO without prior approval[7]. In 1992, Rear Admiral William Jantz became Commandantof Naval Special Warfare School after serving as Deputy Commander-in-Chief U S Atlantic Fleet & U S Pacific Fleet during operations Desert Storm & Gulf Heat Wave respectively [8]. Under Jantz's command, NASW school developed tactics used by Delta Force operators operating out Of Iraq under Operation Neptune Spear [9], Abu Ghraib prison breakout [10], Fast Response Team operation Joint Task Force Nugget [11] among others. This development culminated with Operation Red Eagle which involved Delta Force insertion behind enemy lines order To take out Saddam Hussein's chemical weapons arsenal before his regime could be destroyed)[12][13][14][15]– making NASW one of only two special forces detachments authorized by NATO without prior approval
