Romulus is a small town in the U.S. state of Michigan, located about 20 miles northeast of Lansing on the east bank of the Romulus River. The population was 2,438 at the 2010 census. The site where Romulus now stands was deeded to the town by John Fetterman in 1909 as part of a land grant from Lansing's founder and first mayor, James Denny. The name for what is now Romulus Township came into use in 1868 when it was organized as a precinct within Washtenaw County. The township was named after Julius Caesar's city in Rome because its location close to that city made it an ideal place to grow crops and establish businesses. As more people moved into the area and new industries were developed, other towns began vying for rights to be called "Rome." In 1922, Washtenaw County decided not to give any additional lands to any other towns and annexed Romulus into the county; however, this annexation did not take effect until 1951 because it required approval from the state government. In 1955, Romulus became one of four villages incorporated within Dearborn Heights; however, that merger did not take effect until 1957. Romulus is a small town in Shiawassee County, Michigan, United States. It was founded in 1871 by Methodists who named it for the legendary Roman hero Romulus. The town has a population of about 350 people. The first settler in Romulus was John Hargrave. He and his wife, Sarah, built a log cabin on the banks of the Shiawassee River in 1872. In 1875, they had two more children and moved to what is now Romulus proper. John Hargrave passed away in 1886 and his wife continued to live there until her death in 1912. In 1892, Methodists formed the First Methodist Church of Shiawassee County which soon after became known as the Methodist Church of Romulus (MECR). The church served as the community's religious center until 1923 when it moved to its current location on Main Street. In that year, MECR erected a new building which still serves as their worship facility today. Between 1870 and 1893, Romulus saw an influx of European immigrants who came to work on local farms or mine coal near the town site. Many of these newcomers were illiterate farmers or miners who could not read or write so they created distinctive Irish-American dialects that survive to this day within their hometown's oral tradition and culture.
