Romulus is one of two villages in Kalamazoo County, and it is also the only incorporated village. The first settler in what is now Romulus was David Snyder who arrived in 1836. He named his land after the Roman god of war, Mars. A post office called Romulus was established in 1849, and remained open until 1953. Romulus had a schoolhouse from 1868 to 1870 and a Methodist church from 1870 to 1886. In 1907, Romulus became one of several villages that were consolidated into the new town of Kalamazoo Township by municipal resolution passed by township trustees meeting at a hotel on State Street just north of current day Capitol Avenue. At that time there were only six full townships in Michigan with over 100 residents each; Kalamazoo Township had fifty-four residents when it joined with Romulus as a part oftownship consolidation. The combined population for both villages reached 1,047 by 1910 when it merged into the new city ofKalamazouvember 2nd ward seat being vacated by John Vansickle who died suddenly while serving as mayor pro tem during mayoral term beginning 6/24/1910 thru 11/30/1910 due to illness or accident; he would have been reelected if he had lived through his term (11/9/1910 thru 12/6/1920). The merger created more than just an Urban Village; it also created an additional ward seat within City Hall allowing for increased representation on city council (see below). There are several interesting stories associated with this period including: first African American councilmember elected outside Detroit – Harry Green (councilman 7th Ward), second African American councilmember elected outside Detroit – Asa Hutchinson (councilman 5th Ward), third African American councilmember elected outside Detroit – Willie McGee (1st Ward) and fourth African American councillor elected outside Detroit – Floyd McKeever Jr., Jr., fifth black member on city Council representing 2nd Ward which included parts of present day Highland Park neighbourhood - all four men would serve terms longer than their predecessors despite no political experience beyond running for election instead of incumbency! In 1912 citizens adopted a charter reaffirming their democratic rights as well as pledging to support prohibitionism against state prohibition laws enacted that year by then Governor William Jennings Bryan “It gives me great pleasure” wrote Mayor Vansickle about voter approval for prohibition legislation “I believe we can get along without anything like that because I think our people will stand up to them” reflecting similar sentiment expressed throughout much OF Michigan during this time period about opposing government intrusion into personal liberties protected under the First Amendment to the United States Constitution
