In 1872, The Olympia Coffee House was built and served as the nucleus for what would become Romulus' current coffee industry. Over time, other businesses have joined The Olympia such as Rheingold Coffee & Cigar Emporium, which closed in 1984 and reopened as a cafe in 1990. Today, there are more than 20 coffee shops throughout Romulus that serve over 2 million cups of joe each month!

The town has had many changes over the years. In 1957, it became part of Macomb County. In 1990, it merged with neighboring townships to form a new municipality, which continues to exist today as Romulus Township. The township was established as an agricultural community that grew crops such as corn and wheat until the early 1960s when industries began to arrive in the area includingpetroleum production and aluminum smelting. As more businesses came into existence, average household incomes increased but also prices for goods increased substantially making living conditions challenging for many residents. However, over time there has been progress made with some vernacular housing developments being constructed while other infrastructure projects have been completed or are ongoing such as a new library and plaza complete with retail space and full-time employment opportunities for both current and future residents.

Romulus is a small town in the Kalamazoo area of Michigan. It was founded by German settlers in 1824, and became a village in 1848. The community site is now occupied by the Romulus Heritage Museum. The first settler to arrive in what is now Romulus was Wm. Ayerbach, who arrived on July 8, 1824. He and his family were the first white citizens of Romulus Township. On October 1, 1825, Wm. Ayerbach donated land for a courthouse and jail at the corner of Main and School Streets. In 1830, he gave another piece of property for a schoolhouse and other buildings on Third Street near State Road 12 (now I-196). Romulus had three churches: one built around 1830 by Revs. George Frederickson and John McKinnon; another built around 1840 by Revs., Moses Ladd; and yet another built between 1850 and 1860 by Revs.: Jno Ewing & Geo Fenton (the last two being additions to original churches). In 1837, Captn Jesse Morton set up his trading post northeast of present day Romulus at what is now known as Morton's Landing. This location served as the center of trade for local farmers until it closed around 1870 when railroads came into service north of Ann Arbor - making traveling to market much easier than it had been before. In 1865, James Dyson purchased 2/3 interest in the Detroit Manufacturing Company from its creator David Burrhead which led to production at Dyson's factory located adjacent to today's border crossing with Canada
