Romulus is a town in Washtenaw County, Michigan, United States. The population was 1,711 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Lansing–East Lansing Metropolitan Statistical Area. The townsite that now occupies land around Romulus was first settled by German immigrants in 1834. The community of Romulus began to form in 1868 when two brothers, John and Henry Snyder, purchased 640 acres (248 ha) of land adjacent to present-day Romulus from the estate of Captain Abraham Lincoln for $1 per acre. In 1875, Snyder donated an additional parcel of land to the town for use as a school district and cemetery. A post office called Romulus was established in 1876, and remained in operation until it was discontinued in 1907. According to the United States Census Bureau, the town has a total area of , all of it land. As of the census[2] of 2010, there were 1,711 people residing in the town. The population density was . There were 1,412 housing units at an average density of . The racial makeup of the town was 96% White (non-Hispanic), 0% African American, 0% Native American,[3] and 2% from other races.[4] Hispanic or Latinoof any race were 4%Of all households; 6% had children under age 18 living with them,[5] 32% were married couples living together,[6] and 64% were non-families.[7] This percentage rose to 85%] among those who had children ages 18+ living with them; 88%] reported being married couples living together as well as 84%.
In 1835, the first frame of the Michigan State Capitol was erected in Lansing. The capitol building and its grounds were enlarged in 1859 when the state legislature moved from Detroit to Lansing. The first chief justice of the Michigan Supreme Court was appointed in 1875. In 1907, a new wing was added to the capitol complex, including a theater and library. A fire destroyed much of the complex in 1926 but it was rebuilt with an additional wing and more than $1 million in public funds. In 1957, legislation established a university within the state government and property around campus became available for use as school land. Today, Romulus is one of three campuses (along with Ferrisburgh and Grand Rapids) that make up Wayne State University in eastDetroit.
