The history of the Army in Rochester, Michigan dates back to 1847. The first organization of the military in this area was Company A, Michigan Volunteer Infantry. This company was organized at a meeting held on July 1, 1847 at the Masonic Hall. The following year, on September 3, 1848, the regiment became Company E, First United States Colored Troops. On December 12, 1850 Company K was organized and elected its first colonel; Colonel John D. Hardesty served for three years until his death in 1861.
In 1862 Captain George J. Richards of Company I led an attack against Confederate General Robert Ewing's forces at Monterrey Hill near Rochester. This victory marked the beginning of an uninterrupted General William Tecumseh Sherman offensive that swept through southern Michigan during 1863-1865. In 1865 Captain Richards was transferred to command Company G (2nd UIC) Second US Colored Troops which participated in the Battle of Gettysburg where he received a Medal of Honor for his bravery.
On February 10th 1870 Companies F and H were consolidated into one Regiment and redesignated as 5th Brigade Michigan Volunteer Infantry under command Major James Purdy who had previously been with 2nd Minnesota Volunteers (6th Brigade). The brigade fought at Gratiot Plains where it suffered heavy losses but finally emerged triumphant after being reinforced by two regiments from Illinois cavalry under Brigadier General John McClernand and several companies from Indiana infantry under General Zachary Taylor’s command leading to what is still considered one of the most decisive engagements ever fought by American troops outside New York City during the Civil War era when Union casualties amounted to over 50% their opponents' loss only slightly less than total Confederate casualties estimated at 100%. After suffering a number of defeats including near misses at Perryville Bridge and Noyes’ Mill Railroad Station Colonel Purdy resigned his commission on October 20th 1870 due to ill health having never recovered fully from wounds received while fighting in Mexico City campaign some two years earlier while commanding 1st Michiganders Volunteers Coy 9Sep1867-15Oct1868 & 5Apr69-9May70.
He died suddenly about 4 month later aged 54yrs old>
His remains are interred with repose within Arlington National Cemetery.

In 1847, John Sohier donated land that became Conshohocken Park in east Rochester; this donation helped spur further growth in the city due to its proximity to valuable resources like coal and lumber. In 1865, when Lansing was merged with Grand Rapids into Michigan Territory, Rochester became part of that new territory too.
