Riverview is a small town in the Ottawa County, Michigan, United States. The population was 2,951 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Grand Rapids–Walkingford–East Lansing Metropolitan Statistical Area. The village was founded in 1872 by Capt. George W. Hoyt and his wife Abby. It was named for the river that flows through it. Riverview grew rapidly after World War II when factories were built there and people came to work in the mills and businesses around town. The population decreased in the 1970s and 1980s as manufacturing moved away from Riverview and other towns in Eastern Michigan started to decline as well. Riverview is a town in the Macomb County, Michigan, United States. The population was 1,887 at the 2010 census. Riverview is located on the eastern bank of the Grand Traverse Bay of Lake Huron. The first permanent settler in what would become Riverview was John Fenton in 1825. A post office called "Fenton" was established in 1826 and remained in operation until it was discontinued in 1904. In 1836, James Swayne purchased land east of present-day Riverview from John Fenton. He named his new settlement "Riverside." By 1840, Riverside had a school and a few stores. It was not until after Michigan's admission to the Union as a state in 1848 thatriverviewscholarshipwasestablished; this award provided financial assistance to students attending college or working on farms near metropolitan Detroit. In 1861, when Macomb County became part of the newly formed State of Michigan, Riverview merged with other communities within its borders including Dearborn Heights (later renamed Romulus), Highland Park, and Orion Township to form what would eventually be known as Riverview Township. The township's first mayor was George Waring (1861-1863). During this time period early settlers developed crops such as corn and peas on their properties while also quarrying limestone for building purposes and manufacturing tools and implements from local stone quarries which were located near present day Mount Morris Avenue and Washtenaw Street. Some residents still live today within what has been designated by locals as their “ pioneer days” because many aspects of their community remain unchanged to this day including its name, appearance on maps dating back to pre-New Deal days (1937), ZIP code (73401), size relative to other townships within Macomb County (less than one-tenth the size when compared to Bloomfield Hills/Northeast Wayne Township) – all while experiencing rapid growth over ensuing decades!
