Portage, Michigan is a small town in the US state of Michigan. It is located in Portage County, about 20 miles west of Detroit. The population was 1,564 at the 2010 census. The first permanent settler in what is now Portage was Jacob Haggerty in 1810. He and his son John founded the village of Haggerty on the east side of the Ottawa River. In 1814, Indian Chief Joseph Brant attacked and killed Haggerty and his family; this event is commemorated by a granite monument at mile marker 95 on Highway M-19 (now I-94). In 1816, Nicholas Larkin bought 2,000 acres (1 km²) around present day Portage from the Potawatomi Tribe for $2 per acre ($20 worth of land today). Larkin named his new settlement after General Anthony Wayne – one of America’s most celebrated military leaders during the War of1812 – who had helped him purchase land near Fort Dearborn. Larkin built a log cabin near what is now downtown Portage to serve as his headquarters while he developed his holdings. By 1830, Larkin had erected several other buildings including a gristmill which he used to produce flour for local merchants and farmers; lumber yards were also established soon afterwards. One early resident of Portage was Isaac Hubbard who operated a bakery and grocery store from an old house on Main Street until 1966 when it burned down due to arson. George Goggin assumed duties November 5th after Fenton's return.. In November 1830 AnthonyWayne ordered all stores closed because supplies were running low due to war occupation changes across western Michigan...On December 10th Nathan Lyon received orders from General Wayne notifying him that hostilities would end within 7–8 months….By January 4th 1831 all stores except Mrs Lyon's were closed because she continued operate them under special terms…Mrs Lyon reopened her store on February 6th with only 9% stock remaining….In 1840 Isaac Hubbard sold 600 acres (240 ha) around present day downtownPortage for $4 per acre ($60 worth today). This large donation helped spur development in that area such as several homes being built atop tall hills overlooking downtown between 1840-1850 inclusive…..During prohibition era several businesses like Mr Morse’s Hardware & Liquor Store got updates tan “Prohibition Businesses Not open any longer” However they reopened successfully once liquor licenses were obtained……In 1957 Ziegfeld Studios filmed an episode “Mackenzie” starring Donald Sutherland here on location…..After years without major development or use Little Portugal Creek waterfront park opened up along Little Portugal Creek just north of town center w/ public beach access………………The last train ran through town May 15 th 1954 & it has been said that many people saw it come into town but no locomotive or car ever arrived…………….Today there are few people living within city limits but some businesses remain………………
