Portage, Michigan is a small town in the U.S. state of Michigan. It is located on the Indiana side of the St. Clair River and was founded in 1834 by French-Canadian traders as a fortified trading post between Warsaw, Indiana and Detroit, Michigan. The name comes from its location downstream from the mouth of the White River on Big Rapids Dam which forms part of the Chicago Lakeshore waterway system. The first settler in what would become Portage was Jean Baptiste Rousseau who arrived in 1832 with his family from Canada. Rousseau built a cabin on land that he donated to the community for $5 per year in 1834. In 1836, another group of settlers, led by John Dallaire, founded the Village of Portage near current day Downtown Portage. The village grew quickly due to its central location and easy access to goods and services available along the then newly opened white-less St. Clair River corridor. In 1840, following discovery of copper deposits in nearby Battle Creek County (now MI), several more families moved into what would becomePortage Township including John Godfrey’s five children who helped found Rice University one mile northeast of present day downtownPortage in1841 On November 25th 1846 local residents voted to create a new township named after General George Washington “Washburn” Posey whose home still stands on Main Street today within walking distance of many businesses while also serving as an excellent museum open daily 9am – 5pm
