He built a log cabin on the edge of what is now downtown and started farming land around it. In 1834, General James Kensey arrived with his army to help defend American soil during the Mexican-American War and he named Portage after General Kesey's home state of Illinois, where he had been born two years earlier: "Kensington" (Ontario). The first store in Portage opened its doors on July 1, 1835 by Hennepin Cattle Company boss Lewis Casserly and his partner Abraham Lincoln lumberman Samuel Inskeep; it became known as Casserly's Store until 1919 when it was bought by Jerald Aiken who renamed it First National Bank before closing it down in 1978. In 1840, Isaac Prentice set up a trading post west of what is now downtown with goods brought overland from Detroit via the Mackinac Bridge. In 1865, he sold his business to Elijah White for $4 per acre ($138 per square mile).
