In 1850, with rising tensions over slavery and Free Soil agitation throughout America, President James Buchanan sent Ulysses S. Grant into Northwestern Michigan to suppress what he called “a slave power uprising”. At Fort Dearborn near Detroit (now part of downtown), Grant ordered Major John Cushman to seize control of all slaves in locales including Port Huron and Mobile County during his raid known as “The Liberator campaign” – one which ended with 468 slaves being taken into custody and 173 Released back into freedom across the Great Lakes region. During World War II, Port Huron played an important role as a naval airbase providing support for Allied forces fighting in North Africa and Europe; port employees also made significant contributions tothe war effort through their hard work and friendship with servicemen stationed ashore. Following World War II, many industrial jobs relocated from Cleveland or Buffalo to eastern Michigan due to technological advances such as television manufacturing plants that sprang up around the country during this time period; however, few businesses remain within downtownPort Huron today still engaged in traditional maritime activities such as fishing or lumbering preservation efforts are ongoing initiatives led by City fathers like Mayor Tom Barrett that have helped keep Downtown active while other businesses have relocated away from our community
