Port Huron, Michigan is a city in the Lower Peninsula of Michigan. The population was 43,711 at the 2000 census. It lies on the Detroit River at the east end of Lake Huron. The city proper includes only a small area along its eastern border with Flint, which is also in the lower peninsula. The first permanent European settlement in what is now Port Huron was made by French trappers and traders in 1795. Fort Niagara was built to protect this early site; it still stands today as a National Historic Landmark. In 1807, United States General Dearborn founded Greenville Settlement on land that became part of Port Huron after he captured it from the British during the War of 1812. In 1814, Ulysses S Grant landed at Mackinac Island and began construction of Fort Michilimackinac on what is now Mackinac Island. This fort served as an important advance guard for General Winfield Scott’s Invasion of Mexico in1846 and as key tactical assets during those operations. During World War II, Port Huron played an important role as one of two naval sea ports between Detroit and Great Lakes Naval Base at Annapolis Maryland (the other being Chicago). The port's importance declined after 1945 but it continued to play an important role through various types of commercial transportation including trucking and air cargo handling until 1997 when it closed down due to economic problems exacerbated by worldwide recession

The Coast Guard played an important role during World War I as well, rescuing merchant sailors and crew members from shipswrecked off the East Coast. Since the late 1800s, there have been several iterations of the Coast Guard. Today, there are five different service branches: Patrol, Rescue/Lifeboat/Search and Parachute/Hazardous Material Response (HMR). Additionally, there are multiple detachments scattered throughout the United States that provide support to other branches of the Service. It is the smallest community in Bay County and the second-smallest city in Michigan after Detroit. Port Huron was founded by John C. As a result of these soldiers' absence, prices for goods sold in local storehouses rose sharply due to lack of available labor supplies essential to operations (e.g., coal). Additionally, rationing policies instituted by both sides kept many people food insecure until later years despite ample availability during peacetime periods prior to war (see also breadlines).
