The city was founded in 1813 by fur traders and missionaries as a port on the eastern border of what is now Ontario County. From its early days, Port Huron played an important role in both American and Canadian history. The first English settlement in this region was built by John Smith on Monongahela River in 1795. In 1803, Commodore George Washington ordered Captain James Cook to explore and chart the Northwest Passage to India while commandeering HMS Discovery (now Discovery Museum) for this purpose. This led to British control over much of North America during the Age of Empire, including Port Huron. In 1814, after years of effort by United States Marines under Major General Samuel Posey, Fort Snelling was completed along with other strategic fortifications on Muskegon Peninsula to protect against Russian expansion into Upper Michigan from Lake Superior. This event became known as "the Battle at Fort Snelling." The city grew rapidly around these installations and soon emerged as an important trading center for area farmers and fur traders. In 1830, new Ulysses S Grant named Port Huron "the most important town in Michigan" because it had become a major shoreline trade center for goods moving upriver from points east across Lake Superior to Detroit through what is now Ontario County and then downriver to Chicago via Pere Marquette Bridge crossing Mackinac Island just south of downtown Port Huron (then called Point May). By 1850, when that state's population reached 25,000 people—more than any other local community—Port Huron had become a thriving commercial center with its own schools and churches; it also boasted an impressive harbor which served as an anchorage for vessels coming upriver from points east across Lake Superior and downriver to Detroit; a well-developed transportation system linking nearby towns with downtown; largescale manufacturing; valuable natural resources such as coal mines; lumbering operations; fishing trips available throughout most or all months; significant amounts of human waste disposedoff at designated sites near downtown (and laterat larger septic systems); some brickyards active until about 1925; considerable employment opportunities for women workers who came out into open fields during those years away from home cleaning cities like Cleveland or Buffalo
