Pontiac is home to two colleges and three universities: Eastern Michigan University, Wayne State University, and Northern Michigan University. Pontiac is a city in the US state of Michigan. The population was 25,812 at the 2010 census. It is the county seat of Oakland County. The first settlement in Pontiac was made on December 14, 1817 when General John Cushing and his forces invaded what is now Detroit to free slaves taken by the British during the Napoleonic Wars. They established a trading post on the Rouge River and named it "Pontiac". The town grew rapidly with settlers coming from as far away as Illinois, Kentucky, and Indiana. In 1826, Pontiac became a city under its own charter with Samuel Mosely as its first mayor. In 1841, an act of Congress passed which designated Oakland County as one of twelve counties in Michigan for direct incorporation into the United States. On July 1,1865, Pontiac became an incorporated city under ordinance number 4562 approved by Mayor Samuel Morse. On November 5th of that year it was renamed to "Detroit" after becoming part of the new nation following America's victory over Great Britain in World War II
