Pontiac is a city in the Calumet County, Michigan, United States. The population was 21,723 at the 2010 census. Pontiac is the second-largest city in Michigan after Detroit. It is also the state's third-largest city by population after Lansing and Grand Rapids. The first settler in Pontiac was John Fritchey who arrived in 1824. The town started as a Methodist mission station on the east side of Saginaw River. In 1827, John Fritchey donated land to build a town center on what is now Midtown Pontiac. On July 1, 1827, Pontiac became an incorporated village with a population of just under 100 people and six businesses. By 1840, there were over 2200 residents living in Pontiac and its immediate area including present day Midtown and parts of downtowns such as First Congregational Church and State Capitol Building. The growth of Pontiac was due to its location at the crossroads of two important transportation routes - the Pere Marquette Road which led down into Huron County from upstate New York through Toledo via Detroit while also providing access to Angelina County on the west side of Lake Superior; and US 6 which crossed Saginaw River near where it currently meets I-75/I-94 next to Joe Louis Arena
