Pontiac is a city in the Upper Peninsula of Michigan, United States. The population was 997 at the 2010 census. Pontiac is home to four colleges and universities: Michigan State University, Kent State University, Wayne State University, and Northern Michigan University. Pontiac's nickname is "The City of Progress." It was founded on June 5, 1812 as Indian Cañon by Colonel J.B. Centralia and his men while they were exploring the area for a new site for Fort Michilimackinac. In 1813, when Macomb County was created from part of Huron County, Pontiac became one of its first townships. The town had grown rapidly since its founding and by 1820 it had outgrown its original structure on the banks of the Ottawa River which served as its courthouse and jail until 1850. In 1825 an act was passed creating a new county named after General John Custer who had been killed at Battle of Little Bighorn two years earlier. The township was renamed Pontiac in his memory with growth continuing until it reached its present size in 1830 when land west of the Ottawa River was donated to be developed into what is now downtown Pontiac. During World War II, much activity took place within or near Pontiac due to production at nearby GM plants that produced vehicles such as Jeeps and tanks; among these plants were those that manufactured parts for both Allied forces fighting in Europe (the US Army's P-38 Lightning fighter aircraft) as well as Soviet Union troops who fought against Nazi Germany during World War II (the Red Army's T-34 tank). Some historic buildings located within or adjacent to GM plants have since been demolished or altered but many remain standing including: the old Buick factory building which still stands next to Interstate 94; the former Ford plant on Woodward Avenue between Gratiot Avenue and Third Street which continues to serve as an office complex known today as One Ford Center; Park Place Towers located just east of downtown on I-94 nears Mackinac Island; also remaining are numerous small businesses located throughout downtown Pontiac such as Girdershine Chevrolet Sales & Service which has been open since 1951; Wabash Drugs store closed in 1984 but reopened under different ownership in 2009 reopened inside Ambassador Bridge Terminal mall across from Chrysler Building ; Chilton Tire store closed in 1984 moved outside onto I-94 nears airport exit ramp however shuttered again in 2018 following bankruptcy filings Pontiac grew slowly until 1830 when land west of the Ottawa River was donated Downtown Pontiac grew quickly from 1830 until 1870 when it reached its present size d urking w ithout h avi ng t he p roperties n ow ld o f th e i r m ost rea d wi thout hav ing t he p opularity changin g
