There has been a history of military deployments in Pontiac, Michigan dating back to the early 1800s. The area was first settled by Native Americans and later became part of the Great Lakes region. In 1814, the United States government purchased land in what is now Pontiac from the Ottawa Nation. This purchase provided justification for American forces to be stationed here during times of war or emergency. The first European settlers in Pontiac arrived in 1796. They were led by Captain John Purdy, who founded the town on a hill overlooking downtown. The town was renamed after General George Washington during his visit in 1804. In 1810, General Anthony Wayne besieged Fort Dearborn and successfully captured it despite heavy Indian resistance. This victory gave Ulysses S Grant carte blanche to march on Detroit without any opposition from the local population. This event helped solidify American control over much of western Michigan and parts of Ontario Canada while also sparking development within Pontiac itself into an important commercial center and cultural hub for America’s Midwest region. During World War II, Pontiac played a significant role as one of five U.S Army Air Forces bases located in southern Michigan; this included RAF Station Benton Harbor (now Demopolis), which was used as a bombing range for aircraft flying over England during World War II; Whitcomb Air Force Base at Clinton Township; and Grand Marais Army Depot at Wixom where supplies were diverted from Japan during World War II as well as being used as a prisoner-of-war camp during the Korean War

Pontiac, Michigan is a small town in Macomb County, Michigan. The population was 2,859 at the 2000 census. Pontiac is located on the Ottawa-Hitchcock River and is part of the Lansing Metropolitan Statistical Area. The town started as a log cabin settlement in 1827 by Captain James K. Polk and his family. In 1835, General David Dixon established a post office in the town which served as its main artery until it was discontinued in 1841. The first store opened in Pontiac on May 1, 1836 by Jno Buell when he began trading goods with the surrounding area for wagonloads of flour brought overland from Illinois via Detroit. By 1840, there were three stores and sixteen residents in Pontiac. In 1865, John Daley founded a sawmill and gristmill near what is now Old Bridge Road east of downtown Pontiac. From this mill village grew up around it an agricultural community that continues to thrive today thanks to its fertile land and strong water supplies. After World War II ended with Japan's surrender, many Japanese Americans who had been living in the area returned home (many did not have permits to leave). The townsfolk helped facilitate their return by building roads and filling up pails with water used for irrigation back into their homes so they could continue farming their land without fear oflynxing or being evicted during war times( see also: "Operation Wetlands"). Today there are few reminders of wartime life save for one large spitfire still parked outside of Plaza Drive south of town off Old Bridge Road after years of sitting idle on its cargo lot(see photo below). Pontiac was incorporated as a municipality on November 3rd 1902 under the name "Oak Park". It changed its name again on December 6th 1907 to "Pontiac" after Colonel Hanks Pontiac who had donated land for the community center which became municipally owned property upon incorporation.(See map attached) In 1912 when it reorganized under new government laws local businesses were required to obtain licenses from county officials before doing business within the city limits due to prohibitionism then rampant across America However local merchants continued doing business unlicensed until repealed by state congress early 1915 allowing Flint based General Motors Corporation unrestricted access to American markets through operations within city limits.( See photo above right) This event marked end isolationism among American municipalities which would continue into later decades despite growing international competition

The city of Pontiac, Michigan is named after Oliver Hazard Perry, who fought in the American Revolution. The town was founded by General John Knowles and his wife Deborah in 1805. It grew rapidly during the 1800s as a result of its strategic location near the Shiawassee River. In 1826, Pontiac became a county seat and was renamed Middle Township. The population of Pontiac reached 100,000 by 1830. During the 1840s, many manufacturing businesses were established in Pontiac including breweries, tanneries and flour mills. By 1850, the city had more than 2,000 residents and was home to six churches and two banks. After being suffering from financial difficulties for several years, Pontiac decided to adopt a new form of government which would allow it to make decisions for itself. In 1857, it became an incorporated city with its own mayor and council system under which it could make its own taxes and ordinances without interference from the central government. However, following the American Civil War (1861-1865), Pontiac lost much of its industrial base as factories closed down or were bought out by other companies. Despite this setback however,Pontiac continued to grow rapidly through various economic opportunities throughout the 1870s and 1880s until it reached its current population size of approximately 60,000 people today.
