The history of the Coast Guard can be traced back to October 15th 1915 when the first organized coast guard unit was established in New York City. At its inception, the Coast Guard consisted of just a handful of men who patrolled the waters off Long Island Sound. From this small beginning, the Coast Guard quickly became an essential part of America’s maritime security system. In 1919, Congress passed The National Defense Authorization Act which mandated that all U.S coasts be defended against any possible attack by foreign nations. This mandate led to increased Coast Guards presence on American shores and also provided financial support for their operations. In 1937, President Franklin D Roosevelt issued Executive Order 9066 which outlined The National Security Strategy of America’s Future. This order called for an increase in federal spending on defense along with new measures aimed at protecting our coastline from potential threats such as piracy and enemy submarines. As a result of this directive, the Coast Guard saw an expanded role in both peacetime and wartime efforts. In 1941–1942 World War II saw unprecedented levels of naval activity off America’s coasts which threatened both our maritime infrastructure and human lives; however, thanks to the coordinated actions of our seafarers and commanders alike, no lives were lost or damaged during this time period
