The Michigan Air National Guard's 310th Fighter Wing, is the only active squadron of the United States Air Force in Pontiac. The wing was formed on 1 October 1948 and became operational on 15 April 1949 as a fighter-bomber unit equipped with Lockheed P-38 Lightning aircraft. Air Defense Command activated the wing on 8 May 1950 under Tenth Army command and it initially operated Boeing A-26 Invaders from its base at Selfridge AFB near Detroit. The wing then moved to RAF Amberley, England in late 1950 for Initial Operational Test and Evaluation (IOT&E) operations against North Korean airspace. IOT&E testing also included flights into Cuba during Operation DIME in early 1951 as part of United States Program 10A designed to improve air defenses against an anticipated Communist assault on South Korea. In May 1952, the 310th Fighter Squadron deployed to Japan for three months of operations using Lockheed F-104 Starfighters before returning home in September. In January 1953, the wing began regular deployments to various Eighth Air Force bases throughout Southeast Asia flying Boeing E-1B Skymasters until mid-1954 when they were replaced by McDonnell Douglas F-4 Phantom IIs. In February 1954, hostilities between North Korea and South Korea recommenced and the 310th FS flew missions over that country conducting aerial reconnaissance until relieved by other units in March 1955. The squadron returned to America after deployment midway through 1957 when it received its first Republic Fmodel jet aircraft. After being reactivated from inactive status on 1 November 1958 at MacDill AFB Florida as a fighter unit equipped with Republic RF-84F Thunderjets, it operated these jets until redesignated 310th FG (later Wright Flying Training School) which was discontinued effective 30 June 1962 due to budget cuts resulting in reductions across all USAF squadrons affecting both fighter squadrons within Tactical Air Command although - unlike Tactical Air Command - only one such squadron had been completely disbanded since World War II while others had become wings or groups within Tactical Air Command's component commands; this being the case with both Squadrons 312th FG (later Wright Flying Training School), 306th FG (later Battle Mountain AFB), 309th FG (later Beechcraft Dayton Township), 307th FG (later Francis Gary Powers AMARC).
