In 1868, it became a village and in 1896 it became a town. The current name was chosen by an election committee in 1984. Owosso is a town in the U.S. state of Michigan, and is part of the Muskegon Heights micropolitan area. The population was 1,245 at the 2010 census. Owosso was founded in 1837 by General David Butler and his family. The first post office was established in Owosso on July 10, 1837. In 1847, Owosso became a village and then a town on October 14, 1847 by an act of the Michigan legislature. On May 15, 1870, Owosso became a city when it annexed the neighboring towns of Lathrop and Manistee. The name "Owosso" is from Ojibwe word "o-kwasson." The first settler in what would become Owosso Township was David Butler who arrived with his family in 1837 from Canada. He homesteaded land near what is now downtown Owosso and named it Butlerstown after himself as well as his father-in-law Elijah Howe who had come to help him build the village's first store building (the current courthouse). In 1850, for unknown reasons or perhaps because there wasn't enough water to support any more settlers coming into this territory following the opening of the Erie Canal (later renamed International Canals), all but one of those original seven Butlerstown residents left for unknown reasons shortly before Thanksgiving that year - including their pastor Elijah Howe who went back east to take care of some unfinished business with his Canadian congregation before returning home two weeks later empty handed. David Butler III continued farming until 1870 when he joined other farmers around town making hatchets for local mills - eventually becoming known as "the Father Of Owosso." During this time period owossians were also known for their hard work ethic; they would often go out into rural areas early morning to start cultivating crops so that they could have food available during winter months while others built homes or started shops nearby (a common practice during these days). Another significant early business venture launched byowossians was Mr. Baughman’s sawmillinery shop which operated from what is now Third Street between Lakeshore Boulevard and Wabash Avenue until 1903 when it moved uptown to its current location at 223 E Grand River Avenue due largely to financial stability issues brought about by World War II shortageszoning interests among other things! That same year also sawOWOSSO establish itself municipally with Mayor John Pohlman elected unopposed after serving three terms consecutively representing ward 3B (now Ward 2) on City Council...Pohlman represented an important change starting then because prior thereto almost everyone voting on council consisted eitherofmembersfromWard1or2andtherewasnoonefromOWOSSO!
