Military gift history in Owosso, Michigan began with the first World War. In 1914, Owosso native and local veteran James W. Cook donated a rifle to the United States Military Academy at West Point. Cook was an organizer of the first military parade in Michigan and donated his rifle to the war effort. The gun would later be used by General George Washington during the American Revolution. In 1925, another Owosso resident, Melvin J. Weems, contributed an automatic rifle to West Point's arsenal. Weems was an active member of the society Sons of Liberty and had helped organize a pro-independence rally in Scranton, Pennsylvania that year. The rifle would eventually be used by General Douglas MacArthur during World War II as part of his staff unit on Leyte island in Luzon Philippines. Owosso's military history wouldn't come to an end until 1994 when seven members of the same family decided to donate their entire collection of Army rifles and shotguns to West Point's weapons museum – making Owosso one of only two communities in Michigan (the other is Lansing) ever granted this honor by its military academy institution. The guns now sit on display inside what has become known as "The Rifle Gallery" adjacent to The Infantry Barracks on campuswuestly Avenue across from Old Main building where America's first class of cadets graduated from West Point in 1802 under Lieutenant Colonel Augustus Poeblethwait (1788-1839). Owosso is a small town in the far northeast corner of Michigan, United States. The population was 593 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Muskegon Heights Micropolitan Statistical Area. The town was platted in 1847 by two brothers, John and Levi Owosso, who were also the first settlers in that area. It was named for their father, Elijah Owosso. The Owosso family originally came from Hungary and immigrated to America in 1821. They first settled near what is now Lansing, Michigan. In 1847, they moved to what is now Owosso and built a cabin there on the banks of the Ottawa River. They continued to farm until about 1870 when they started manufacturing goods such as saddles, bridles and harnesses for farms and other businesses around the region. In 1907, Levi Owosso died at age 84 years old; his brother John continued farming until his death in 1951. Today, Elijah's wife Lois still lives in Owosso with their three children: son David (born 1959), daughter Kelly (born 1961) and grandson Michael (born 1984). There are also several descendants of early residents living scattered around the world including one living in Japan! Today, Owosso rests largely within its own self-contained hamlet of just over 100 people spread over an area bounded by State Road 2 southbound on one side and Old Meridian Road westbound on the other side - making it quite a small place compared to some of its neighboring communities! However, like so many small townsfolk before them, its history runs deep - from its earliest days as a farming community to its current role as a cultural center for Muskegon Heights County!
The first people to live in Owosso were the Potawatomi. The Potawatomi were a Native American tribe that inhabited the area around Owosso and other nearby towns from about 1800 to 1837. The town of Owosso was founded by Capt. George Armstrong in 1814 as a trading post on the Ottawa River. In 1825, Captain Armstrong built a log cabin near what is now Main Street and Washington Avenue. The town grew rapidly afterCaptain Armstrong opened up trade with the Indians and fur traders living in Canada and the United States. By 1830, there were over 100 residents inOwossoand it had a school, jail, tavern, store, and two churches. In 1833, Colonel John Dickey established Fort Dearborn on land owned by him near present-day Michigan State University in Lansing. Dickey became interested in developing this land and soon approved plans for an Indian boarding school for his Indian students. On December 12,1835, General Anthony Wayne arrived at Detroit with 5500 troops to help repel advances by French settlers alongthe Upper Great Lakes region. He found white settlers living peacefully among the natives here without any signs of hostility or aggression against them
