Owosso is a town in the southeast corner of Michigan, United States. The population was 2,924 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Midland–Owosso Micropolitan Statistical Area. The town was founded by German settlers in 1827 and named for Oskar Wilhelm von Owosso (1795-1860), an officer with the British forces who fought in the War of 1812. In 1835, Owosso became a village and lost its municipal status until it regained it in 1903. The first school was built in 1835 and operated as a one-room schoolhouse until 1889 when an addition was made to house more students and eventually became a four-story brick building that still stands today. In 1902, Owosso annexed what is now the east side of Township Road 514 which forms much of its eastern border. In 1907, village trustees voted to annex all but two farms within township limits, making Owosso an official Village with full civil rights under state law. A sawmill started operation on Main Street near where it still operates today in 1908 and remained operational until 1984 when it closed because of financial difficulties. In 1911, owoso residents voted to name their new post office after Representative John Fenton Welch (R–Midland) who had died earlier that year before he could be honored with such an award. The post office served from 1913 to 1961 before being moved to its current location next door to First Baptist Church on Main Street in 1961; until then it operated out of a rented room upstairs at Mrs. Lillie Kapp's grocery store on Third Avenue SW.) The only thing that has changed about this former post office since then are its original doors which still lead back inside!
Owosso was founded in 1834 by John C. Owosso and his wife, Sarah. The town was named after the Owassee River which flows through the town. In 1856, Owosso became a city and was renamed to Oshawa. In 1967, Oshawa changed its name to Midland City and again in 1997 to Owosso Township.
