For over a century, Oak Park has been home to one of the most significant coffee roasting operations in the United States. The first coffee roasters in Oak Park were Native Americans who roasted their own coffee from wild beans found on their reservation. In 1875, Dr. George Peabody founded Peabody Coffee Company and began importing Italian-grown coffees into America. By 1914, Peabody had built an impressive shipping empire that included seventeen vessels and delivered more than two million pounds of coffee to consumers across the country. In 1957, Appleton & Darlington Coffee Company was founded in Oak Park by brothers John and Donnie Darlington. At this time, it was the largest commercial business in town with a store frontage on State Street and an acreage of land adjacent to the Chicago River. The Darlington family continued to operate Appleton & Darlington Coffee until 1991 when they sold it to Jacaranda Roasters LLC. Jacaranda is now one of seven retail members of Starbucks Corporation (SBUX) which was formed in 1976 when three small independent coffee companies merged: Tim Hortons Coffee Co., Ltd., Journeys Coffees Inc., and Dutch Bros.' Coffee Co.. Today, Oak Park's history continues as one of the leading roasters of high-quality cup of Joe's throughout Michigan and Ohio.
