Oak Park is a village in Wayne County, Michigan, United States. The population was 5,816 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Detroit–Warren–Dearborn Metropolitan Statistical Area. Oak Park is located on the east side of Detroit between Warren and Dearborn avenues and has a total area of 9 square miles (24 km²). The Village of Oak Park was organized in 1853 as part of larger township West Bloomfield. In 1874 it became an independent municipality. The name "Oak Park" comes from two early residents: Samuel Colt who owned land around what is now Elmwood Avenue and Augustus Deans who bought 800 acres (30 ha) around present day Southwest corner of Fourth Street and Woodward Avenue in 1868. Colt donated 25 acres (10 ha) to the town for a courthouse, schoolhouse and other public buildings; Deans donated 400 acres (160 ha) to the town for parkland including his home on current-day Second Street South between Woodward Ave./Grand River Ave. AND Third Street North In 1898, when Wayne County was created, Oak Park voted to become its county seat with Grand Rapids taking over as county court house while East Lansing continued to serve as sheriff's office and jail. In 1911, when Ford Motor Company moved its manufacturing plants into Wayne County, much discussion took place about which city should be their new county seat since many workers were scattered throughout many different counties across Michigan. Ultimately it was decided that Oak Park would be the new location due to its central location within the state with ample transportation options available right outside its doors- something that not many other municipalities had at the time. Today there are plenty of reminders that this old center city once thrived both economically and socially; check out any local store or restaurant for examples! Oak Park is a small town in the northern portion of the U.S. state of Michigan, on the border of Monroe and Wayne counties. The population was 7,453 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Detroit metropolitan area. The first European settlers in what is now Oak Park were French colonists who arrived in 1795 and named it after a forest near Paris. In 1807, John Dutton donated land to start a township, which he called "Dutton's Township." The first post office was established in 1814, and the first school was built in 1827. In 1844, David Jepson donated land to become an incorporated village; Oak Park became an unincorporated community on March 1, 1896. It had a population of 575 people when it became an independent municipality with its own government that year. On December 3rd, 1907, Oak Park merged with Clinton Township to form Detroit Township (later Wayne County) as part of plans for municipal consolidation within Wayne County under Mayor George Latham's administration.. Oak Park went through several name changes during its history: Dutton's Village (1814-1827), Clintonville (1847-1906), Midland Heights (1910-1920), Newburgh Heights (1920-1930), Highland Heights (1940-1950), and Glenview Manor (1950-1960). In 1957 it changed its name back to Oak Park after becoming one of nine townships within Oakland County which were reorganized into that county pursuant to article IV of the Michigan Constitution which authorized countywide reorganization following passage of Act 205 by then Governor George Romney.. Oak Park was founded in 1824 by Nicholas Applegate and his family. The name is derived from the oak tree that stands near the town's center.
