Oak Park is a city in the U.S. state of Michigan. The population was 58,567 at the 2010 census, making it the 9th most populous city in Michigan and its ninth largest city by area. The name "Oak Park" likely comes from two sources: One source claims that a settler named Oak found an oak tree on his property and called his property "Oak Park." Another report says that John D'Arcy bought land east of Detroit and built a house around 1824 which became known as "D'Arcy's House". This house still stands today and is used as a museum. Oak Park was incorporated as a town on March 16, 1892, following the creation of Oakland County. The merger was made possible by then-Mayor Richard M robeau's efforts to attract businesses to Ferndale while keeping Oak Park's tax base separate from Ferndale's.
