Oak Park is a city in the U.S. state of Michigan and the county seat of 9th District. The population was 68,824 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Detroit metropolitan area. The first coffee shop in Oak Park was opened by two German immigrants, Wilhelm and Anna Kieferer, on Valentine's Day 1876 in what is now known as the "Kieferer Building." Coffee started being sold at this location before moving to a storefront on Gratiot Avenue in 1881. In 1909, Harry Ross opened his first roastery and began manufacturing its own coffee beans. In 1967, Harry Ross Brewing Company merged with Howells Brewing Company and continued to produce its own coffee until it closed in 1984. This leftOak Park with only one commercial roaster: La Cava Coffee & Tea Company which opened in 1990 on Dearborn Street within walking distance of both City Hall and downtown Oak Park. La Cava continues to serve as the town's only full-service retail store today; however, their café has been closed for many years due to lack of business interest or physical ever since they moved into an office building across from City Hall when their building reopened following a major renovation project that included new cafes throughout downtown Detroit during that time period (the old Kieferer Building still functions as office space).

The City of Oak Park was founded on July 1, 1817, by Colonel Nathan Beale and his wife Deborah Beale as a sawmill town northwest of Detroit on the Ottawa River. The townsite became an incorporated village on December 12, 1837[1]. The city's first mayor was Amos Kendall (1801-1885). A variety of industries were developed in Oak Park during its early years: lumbering, shipbuilding, manufacturing products such as cigars and whisky, and agricultural production such as crops such as cotton and corn. However, these efforts ultimately failed to generate muchcollaboration or economic development within the city limits; only two businesses from this period still remain active in downtown Oak Park today:[2] Northwest Glass Works (founded 1912) and Dow Chemical Company (founded 1937). In 1916,[3] Oak Park established itself as an educational center when it purchased land from John Davenport for use as a college campus.[4] In 1951,[5] the United States Air Force constructed a nuclear weapons testing site at nearby Isotope Radiation Laboratories – now known as Legazpi AFB – which encouraged many people to move into Oak Park during its height of development. As a result of this growth and proximity to military activity, both public schools in downtown Oak Park struggled to keep up with enrollment demands; however since 1993[6], new school buildings have been built adjacent to Granada Hills Middle School that accommodate current enrollments without compromising student privacy or visiting sites used for nuclear tests. The first European settlers in what is nowOak Park were French fur traders who arrived during 1694-95 looking for new land to trade with Native American tribes. In 1701, John Clevesman founded a trading post on what is now Nine Mile Road. As early as 1802, settlers began moving into what is nowOak Park from nearby Detroit along with other western settlements such as Muskegon Heights and Whiteford Township. In 1836, five years after Michigan became a state, Congress passed an act providing for township organization within Oakland County based on present day Oak Park; this act created Maplewood Township (later renamed Highland Village) within present day Oak Park. On July 1, 1836 – just two weeks before Michigan's incorporation as a state – President James Kapp designatedoakirk–Whiteford Township (later renamed Haggerty) within present dayOak Park as its first town site according to an ordinance that he submitted to the legislature. By 1860, over 20 homes had been built in downtown OakPark by Germans who had come to pioneer various aspects of Michigan agriculture during that time period following purchase of land from Chief Wyandotte near Gratiot Avenue and Third Street in Detroit while still under British rule because they believed their rights would be better protected under American law than those reserved for chiefs living under British jurisdiction
