The regiment was redesignated as a brigade on November 1, 1912. On May 10, 1915, the brigade became an infantry division and on November 1, 1919 it was redesignated as a corps. The National Guard has been present in Novi since then, with various names and numbers - from 4th Infantry Brigade (Michigan) to 9th Infantry Division (Michigan). In September 1947 alone, the Guardsmen responded to more than 2,000 incidents statewide including acts of terrorism and disturbances. More recently they have served in Support Integration working partnership with law enforcement agencies to promote peace and order during large community events such as Mardi Gras or carnivals. The Michigan National Guard was created on November 15, 1903, when the Michigan Legislature passed a bill designating the State of Michigan as a unit of the United States military. The first members of the guard were drafted from local militia groups and volunteers. On December 12, 1916, President Woodrow Wilson signed a bill that created the U.S. Coast Guard. On October 16, 1917, Congress passed a second act designating the National Guard of each state as part of the Coast Guardsman Reserve Corps for military service during World War I. In 1920, President Warren G Harding authorized establishment of an Air Force to provide aerial transportation for troops in World War I and II. Novi, Michigan is a small town located in the Lower Peninsula of Michigan. The population was 5,898 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Kalamazoo-Portage County metropolitan area. Novi was founded in 1836 by George Washington Dixon and named for General John Custer, who fought in the American Civil War. It became a city in 1907 and remains an agricultural center with a diverse economy. The first settlers to Novi were farmers who arrived on horseback from Illinois in 1836. They developed a farmstead that included seven cabins and two barns. In 1840, they built a store and post office on the corner of Third Street and Main Avenue. The early settlers were Methodists but soon began to convert to Lutheranism because it was more practical than other denominations for farming purposes. In 1847, George Witherspoon erected the first mill on the river near what is now Elmira Road and Fourth Street. This mill operated until 1862 when it was destroyed by fire. The next year saw another large crop of corn (the first ever grown in this area), so William Dixon replaced Witherspoon as owner of the mill site. He built a new mill on Sixth Street between Elmira Road and Ionia Drive about two miles east of Novi Township boundary line today’s Elmira Rd/Ionia Dr intersection). This mill continued operating until 1903 when it went out of business due to competition from larger mills south of Decatur Ave.. A portion of this structure still stands as part of Decatur Ave./Herschel Rd., MI village’s historical district today which includes much older structures dating back to pre-Civil War times within its boundaries including one historical building dating back to 1795! Novi was founded in 1834 by a group of Swedish immigrants. Novi became a town after being organized as a village in 1857. The first post office was established in Novi in 1859. In 1865, the first school opened in Novi and it remained open until 1971. In 1901, the first electric power line was built in Novi and it continued to be used until 1978.
