Novi is a small town in the state of Michigan, United States. The population was 5,362 at the 2010 census. Novi is part of Saginaw Township and Metro Detroit. It lies within the Decatur County metropolitan area. The first settler in what is now Novi was Charles Hough, who arrived on July 6, 1824 from Ottawa County, Ohio. He named his land "Hough's Corners." By 1829 there were nine settlers in Novi. In 1830 Charles Hough sold his interest in the town to Nicholas Noyes for $200 cash; he also donated two acres (0.8 km2) of land to the township as well as 50 acres (20 km2) of woods to be used for public purposes. On December 15, 1830, Noyes organized a meeting to accept membership in the township and set up a courthouse and jail; he also donated five lots of land east of where Main Street intersects State Road 2nd near High School for Public Instruction (now known as Woodward Avenue). In 1834 James Mudge moved from Bellevue Township to Novi with his family and began selling lumber from his property on Court Street just south of present-day Main Street. By 1840 there were twenty-six residents in Novi; by 1850 there were forty-nine residents and by 1860 there were seventy-one residents! The first school opened in 1836 under teacher John Prentice using money raised at an auction held that year by Elisha Goode; it served only students living within three miles (5 km) of town limits! In 1842 Samuel Morse endowed a professorship at Wayne State University which became available to anyone living within one mile (1 km) of downtown Detroit; by 1870 it had become an option open only to those owning farmland within three miles (5 km) of downtown! When Congress voted on April 12, 1865 to end slavery in America following the American Civil War, many southeastern Michigan farmers decided they would rather keep their slaves than move thousands of miles away into newly free states like Illinois or Wisconsin – they withdrew their applications for membership in the Union army! This resulted in much hardship for many people who had invested so much time and energy into building new lives here – including manyNovisians! For some time afterward families lived together either side of Woodward Avenue while their farms lay fallow due to lack of funds necessary to purchase them back when prices rose again during Reconstruction period after the war ended: this period is sometimes called "the bad old days" because so few people could afford good farmland anymore On November 8th 1886 local resident Dora Milburn Hodges purchased 1/4 acre (0.16 hectares), west corner lot number 10 on present day Main Street from Wm Tatum for $30 cash with intent “to erect upon said site a house or other permanent structure” she named her home "Dora Milburn Hodges House". Mrs Hodges continued livein'there until her death on October 11th 1955 . After her death assistant treasurer Mrs Florence Bednar boughtoutMrsHodges'interestand construction began on Oct 25 th 1955 called"Nova Community House"
